LAWRENCE BERNARD BROWN
During the final years of slavery in Wacahoota, Florida, Lawrence Bernard Brown was born to Peter and Catherine Brown on September 12, 1856. He was the sixth of eleven children. In 1865, the Brown family migrated to Spring Garden, Florida.
Lawrence Bernard Brown received ownership in a large amount of real es- tate when he married Eliz- abeth Washington in 1881. He built homes on the property, then sold or rented them. In his honor, a street in Spring Garden was named Lawrence Street.
In later years, Brown moved to Bartow, Florida. As a self-taught master car- penter, he continued to build elegant homes. He be- came a skilled entrepreneur and community icon who led by example. His resume’ also included, but was not limited to: Bible salesman, cabinet-maker, umbrella- maker, and furniture repair- man.
On June 16, 1941, at the age of 84, Brown passed away, leaving a large amount of real estate and cash to his eleven children.
The headstone at his gravesite bears a very befit- ting inscription that reads, ‘From slavery to commu- nity builder’.
Brown’s life story is an excellent example of how a person can overcome adver- sity. Though born during slavery, Brown refused to let that factor place bound- aries on his destiny.
In Bartow, the L. B. Brown House is named in memory of Brown and is
listed in the National Regis- ter of Historic Places. This house is believed to be the only one of its kind, still in existence in the State of Florida that was built and owned by a former slave.
Each year, during Black History Month a festival is held in honor of the life of this great pioneer and the contributions that he made to the Bartow community during his lifetime.

Production Company Filming In Lakeland
A local Production Com- pany began filming in Lake- land on January 28th. The company will continue film- ing the movie, “At The End Of The Day,” for a period of 4 weeks.
Kevin O’Brien, the film’s writer and director, is a Lakeland local who felt his hometown was an ideal loca- tion for this smart comedy about acceptance and love.
“Ultimately, this movie is about valuing the stories of others as much as you value your own,” O’Brien said.
He continued, “This is not your typical micro-budget project. We have 15 charac- ters and lots of locations. I didn’t write it to fit a budget, I wrote it to move hearts.”
O’Brien has cast the film with many local actors, as well as better-known actors Stephen Shane Martin (“Abraham Lincoln vs.
Zombies”), Danielle Sag- ona (“Graceland”, “Hush”, “Sleepy Hol- low”), and Tom Nowicki (“The Blind Side”, “Dol- phin Tale”, “Flight”, “Remember the Ti- tans”).
“At The End Of The Day” is a dramatic comedy about a conservative Chris- tian professor who finds him- self in a gay support group to foil their launch of an LGBT homeless youth shelter.
Running concurrently is a crowdfunding campaign to raise a minimum of $15,000 for post-production and film festival costs, which will en- able Fractal Features to bring “At The End Of The Day” to the movie screen. Individ- uals interested in partnering with Fractal Features on this project can visit http://end- ofthedayfilm.com/fund for more information.
