FAMU Falls To North Carolina Central As Hurricane Looms
St. Petersburg native Devin Bowers scores for FAMU.
B-CU vs N. C. A&T Football Game Moved
DURHAM, NC – Hurricane Matthew was the one imposing figure in Saturday’s game, but the North Carolina Central Ea- gles (4-2, 3-0 MEAC) took ad- vantage of two touchdowns in the fourth quarter surge past the Rattlers (1-5, 1-2 MEAC) for a 17-13 final at O’kelly-Roddick Stadium on the campus of NCCU.
The Rattlers started the scor- ing as defensive end Calvin Danville collared an Eagle runner in the end zone for a sack in the first quarter. Kicker/Punter Colby Blanton would tack on a 34-yard field goal to make the score 5-0. The only additional score in the first half would be a 33-yard field goal by NCCU kicker Brandon McLaren.
Both teams would go score- less in a defensive battle in the third quarter.
In the fourth quarter, NCCU quarterback Malcolm Bell hit LaVontis Smith on a 42-yard pass that would be good for an
Eagle touchdown. NCCU would take a 10-5 lead on the Rattlers. But, it wouldn’t last for long as Devin Bowers would scam- per 18 yards for a FAMU touch- down. The Rattlers opted for a two-point conversion try and Ryan Stanley connected with Brandon Norwood in the back of the end zone to take a 13-10 lead over NCCU. With 4:54 remaining, Dorrell Macron’s 25-yard touchdown would seal the game at 17-13.
Stanley took every snap for the Rattlers, going 3-of-14 for 39 yards passing. With wind gusts topping 30 mph as a re- sult of hurricane Matthew, passing yards were at a pre- mium. Bowers, in his first game back since week two of the season, gained 67 yards on 24 carries.
The Rattlers travel to Dover, Delaware to take on the Hornets of Delaware State on Sat., Oct.15 for DSU’s home- coming.
Wildcats and Aggies to Meet in Saturday Afternoon Contest
DAYTONA BEACH, FL – In the wake of Hurricane Matthew, the Bethune-Cookman versus North Carolina A&T football game, originally scheduled for Thursday, October 13, has been moved to Saturday, Octo- ber 15, at 1 p. m. The game will still be played at Municipal Sta- dium in Daytona Beach.
“In consultation with the City of Daytona Beach and the Mid- Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC), we felt it best to move the date and time of the game to a time that is in the best interest of public safety, student welfare and the university,” said Lynn W. Thompson, Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics at Bethune-Cookman.
The game was originally to be aired live on ESPNU, with it tagged as a “Black Out” game for the Wildcats, as kickoff was set for 7:30 p. m.
“Unfortunately, Bethune- Cookman was significantly af- fected by Hurricane Matthew. At this point, it would be better for Bethune-Cookman to host the game on Saturday,” said MEAC Commissioner, Dr. Dennis E. Thomas. “Public safety is our top concern and given the information we cur- rently have regarding the recov- ery process; it was in the best interest of everyone to push back the contest.”
Along with the residents and organizations in Daytona Beach and surrounding communities, Bethune-Cookman University
continues to emerge from the crisis of Hurricane Matthew.
“We are proud of the re- siliency of the B-CU family,” stated Jason Glenn, B-CU Vice President of Student Af- fairs. “After a thorough assess- ment of the campus and university as a whole, we are convinced that we will be able to resume classes on Thursday, October 13, along with activities such as the football game on Saturday, October 15, at 1 p. m.”
Tickets for the game previ- ously set for Thursday night will be honored at the gate on Satur- day.

Johnson finished the day
with three passing touchdowns and two rushing scores. He
threw for 244 yards with no in- terceptions and led the Falcons in rushing with 87 yards on 19 carries.
COLUMBUS, Ga. – Needing a spark after a sluggish first half, the eighth-ranked Golden Tigers of Tuskegee University turned to the passing game in the second half en route to a 28-19 victory over Morehouse College in the 81st annual Tuskegee-Morehouse Classic at AJ McClung Stadium Satur- day afternoon.
With two of the best rushing defenses in the country bat- tling in the trenches Saturday afternoon, combining to give up just 68 yards on 64 carries,
Tuskegee senior Kevin Lacey finished the day throw- ing for 300 yards on 18-of-29 passing with four touchdown passes. He was also named the offensive most valuable player in the game as voted on by the media members in attendance.
While Lacey was throwing the ball around the Morehouse
defense, the Golden Tigers rushing game was held in check with just 35 yards on 40 carries and was led by Kenny Gant with 27 yards on eight carries.
However, the Golden Tiger defense was not to be outdone on the day as they held More- house to just 33 yards on 24 carries running the football and just 176 total yards of of- fense. The Golden Tigers forced three turnovers and sacked Morehouse quarter- back Monqavious Johnson four times on the afternoon.
Tuskegee (6-0, 4-0 SIAC, 1- 0 SIAC West) was the only team to score in the first half as the teams struggled to move the ball against their opponent due to the defensive effort and the wind affecting the passing game.
