Interfaith Service Committee Names 2019 Award Recipients

The 2019 Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Hillsborough County Interfaith Service will be held on Monday, January 21st. The 4 p. m. service will be held at Allen Temple A. M. E. Church, 2101 N. Lowe St. Rev. Dr. Glenn Dames, Sr., is the Pastor.
The Awards Committee has named three recipients for 2019.
Former Tampa mayor,
Sandra (Sandy) Warshaw Freedman is the recipient of the Robert W. Saunders Award.
Mrs. Freedman served as the 55th mayor of Tampa. She was the first female mayor, elected first to com- plete the term on Bob Mar- tinez (July 1986-April 1987). She was then elected and served April 1, 1987 to April 1, 1995.
Prior to becoming mayor, she served on the Tampa City Council, 1974-1986 (1983- 1986 as chair).
The wife of Atty. Michael J. Freedman, Mrs. Freed- man is the mother of 3 chil- dren.
The recipient of the Patri- cia Spencer Award is Fran Tate, who organized and is president of the Jackson Heights Neighborhood Asso- ciation and Crime Watch.
Born and raised in Val- dosta, GA, Ms. Tate says her love for community service was instilled by her “Big Mama” (Victoria) and her Mother Dear (Wilma). She too, has received several awards for service to the com- munity.
She is the mother of 2 chil- dren and a member of the Bay Area Church of Christ in

Ms. Tate has worked at
Moffitt Cancer Center and Re- search Institute for 27 years.
The Lifetime Achievement Award goes to Roy Kaplan, Ph.D. He received his doctoral degree in 1971 in Sociology from the University of Massa- chusetts, Amherst. This is the 30th year that Dr. Kaplan has helped to organize the Hills- borough County Rev. Dr. Mar- tin Luther King, Jr. Interfaith Service. He has received nu- merous awards for his com- munity service. He also served as an advisor to President Bill Clinton’s race relations task force.
The guest speaker for the service will be Leon Russell, Chair of the National Execu- tive Committee of the NAACP.
Members of the Commem- orative Committee are: Anna Torrens Armstrong, Al- bert Coleman, Chloe Coney, Glenn Dames, H. Roy Kaplan, LaShante Keys, Russell Meyer, Jesse Smalley, R. J. Stevenson, Michael Trep- per, Rick Weinberg, and Samuel Lamar Wright, Sr.
