Gadson Sisters Host 3rd
Red Tide Returns To Area Beaches
Annual Event For Seniors
The term “Red Tide’ isn’t strange to Florida beachgoers and officials have announced the dreaded microorganism has returned.
Toxicity induced by inges- tion can occur in humans after eating contaminated shellfish. Individuals can suffer from the debilitating, but usually not fatal neurotoxic shellfish poi- soning. Symptoms include mouth numbness, poor coor- dination, abdominal pain and tingling of the mouth, arms and legs.
Check before traveling to a beach to make sure that there are not active blooms in the area.
The Red Tide Status Line can give you this information. Call (866) 300-9399 inside Florida, and (727) 552-2448 outside of the state.
If anyone experiences any harmful effects of symptoms associated with exposure to aquatic toxins or harmful algae, contact the Marine and Freshwater Toxins Hotline at (888) 232-8635.
