Attorney Uses Sports To Bring Police And Youth Together
BY IRIS B. HOLTON Sentinel City Editor
In recent months, the news has been filled with violent confrontations between African American men and law enforcement. One Tampa at- torney has decided to do some- thing to bring the two entities closer together.
Attorney Antina Mobley will host “Operation Conversa- tion” on Saturday, May 5th, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. It will take place at the NFL YET Cen- ter, 3310 E. Lake Avenue.
It is free and open to the pub- lic. However, those planning to attend are asked to RSVP by contacting Attorney Mobley no later than May 1st, at Mob- leya@pd13.state.fl.us.
An attorney with the Hills- borough County Public De- fender’s Office, Attorney Mobley said the event will consist of breakout sessions.
The young men will partici- pate in three areas of concern (1) Police Encounters, (2) Con- sequences of a Criminal

Record, and (3) Man-to-Man. During this session, the young men will be able to talk to adult males and ask questions or re- ceive mentoring in an all-male environment.
The young ladies will learn about (1) Etiquette, (2) Self De- fense, and (3) Relationships.
The third segment will allow young ladies an opportunity to discuss issues in an all-female environment.
After the breakout sessions, the youth and the adults will
participate in a basketball tour- nament.
The adults in attendance will include law enforcement, attorneys, and other adults who wish to participate.
“We are trying to reach the youth in the community and show them that the youth and law enforcement have more similarities than differences. We want them to understand that when there is an en- counter, both sides are scared. We just want to get them in a room together so that they can talk to each other,” Attorney Mobley said.
The event is being spon- sored by the Office of Ju- lianne Holt, Hillsborough County Public Defender, First Baptist Church of College Hill, Safe & Sound Hillsborough, the Tampa Police Department, Tampa Parks & Recreation, the Tampa Fire Department, and the Hillsborough County Sher- iff’s Office.
The event is designed for youth ages 12 and up, however, everyone is welcome.
