ATTY. W. GEORGE ALLEN
W. George Allen, the first African American to graduate from the Law School at the University of Florida, in 1962, passed away last Thurs- day, Nov. 7th in Ft. Laud- erdale, his family said. He was 83 years old.
Atty. Allen was at the forefront of the civil rights movement, including playing a key role in integrating pub- lic schools in Broward County by filing a landmark 1970 lawsuit.
As a civil rights lawyer, Atty. Allen opened the door for many others. He was de- scribed as a pioneer in the legal profession.
His son, Jonathan, told the Sun Sentinel that his fa- ther, “...grew up in a segre- gated community in Sanford, Florida and he was able to
graduate from Crooms High School in Sanford. I think he would be proud that he de- segregated the Broward County School System.”
He was also instrumental in desegregating the schools in Hendry County, in Central Florida.
U. S. Rep. Alcee Hast- ings was Atty. Allen’s law partner and worked with him on lawsuits dealing with seg- regation and other civil rights matters.
Atty. Allen also served in a number of local, state and national organizations. He was the president of the Na- tional Bar Association and the first president of the associa- tion from Florida, as well as a longtime member of New Mount Olive Baptist Church, where he served as a member of the board of trustees and as attorney for the church. He was also a member of the NAACP, Alpha Phi Alpha Fra- ternity, the Urban League and the Opportunities Industrial- ization Center of South Florida.
Among those to carry on his legacy are his children: Jonathan, Timothy (a for- mer Hillsborough County Deputy), Frederick, and Amy Carole, and other fam- ily members.
A memorial service in honor of Atty. Allen will be announced later.
