A retired federal drug agent entered a plea of guilty Friday to lying to the FBI. He admit- ted he tried to hide the actions of a fellow former agent who was working to free a drug trafficker.
Robert Quinn, 58, was still an active agent when he cov- ered for his friend, who was re- tired and is identified in court documents by the initials S.M.
The friend had gone to work as a private investigator for a drug trafficker who was serv- ing 30 years in prison in a case that S.M. had investigated in the 1990s.
Quinn reportedly didn’t know that his friend had been told by the DEA that he was not allowed to communicate with government officials on behalf of the drug trafficker. So Quinn helped S. M. in his efforts to arrange for the traf- ficker to get a reduction in his sentence.
The plan was for a third party to help in other investi- gations, with credit to go to the trafficker.
At some point. S.M. received a shopping bag with $200,000 in cash from the traffickers’ brother, and he told Quinn what was happening.
The FBI initiated an investi- gation, and Quinn twice met with agents and lied about what he knew. Although the government says the FBI did- n’t know the truth at the time of the first meeting, Quinn told a federal judge that the FBI knew the truth during both meetings.
Quinn’s lawyer said he wanted to launch a legal de- fense, but Quinn insisted on pleading guilty because he vi- olated his own ethical stan- dards.
Quinn faces up to five years in federal prison when he is sentenced at a later date.
