Mr. Cyril Blythe Andrews, Jr.,
was a Tampa businessman and was the third generation leader of his fam- ily’s newspaper, the Florida Sen- tinel Bulletin. The son of Mr. and Mrs. Cyril (Johna) Blythe An- drews, Mr. Andrews attended the
public schools of Hillsborough County. He graduated from Middleton High School in 1946, at the age of 16, and ranked third in his class. He con- tinued his education at Talladega Col- lege in Talladega, Alabama and graduated with a B. A. Degree in Eco- nomics in 1950. Mr. Andrews re- turned to Tampa and obtained employment in the family business, the Florida Sentinel Bulletin newspaper.
His roles of businessman and com- munity activist often overlapped re- sulting in Mr. Andrews being chosen as a representative on several boards and committees. The boards he served on included becoming the first Black to be appointed to the Tampa Sports Authority, in 1975.
Other boards in which he served included: the City of Tampa Employ- ment and Training Council; Commit- tee of 100, Greater Tampa Chamber of Commerce; Hillsborough County Hospital Authority, where he served as Chairman of the Board.
He was a member of Gamma Zeta Lambda Chapter, Alpha Phi Alpha
Fraternity, Inc., a 1984 graduate of All-State Construction College, and President of the Sentinel Develop- ment Company, Inc.
He was the developer who built Orange Blossom Cosmetology Salon, now known as the Open Café, and apartments, and the A. Leon Lowry Center at Beulah I. B. Church.
Mr. Andrews was the Grand President of the Grand Assembly Of Lily Security Benefit Association, Inc., and Chairman of the Board of the Tampa Park Apartments, Inc. He died at the age of 79.
The College Hill Public Library was renamed in his honor on February 9, 2011.
