Ian Manuel was released from prison after serving 26 years in prison. He had been given 2 life sentences for shooting a woman during a robbery when he was 13 years old.
His freedom came about in part due to a new law and the work of the Equal Justice Ini- tiative, who worked with him for more than 10 years to gain his freedom.

Tampa Police Chief Eric Ward launched a mentoring program for young males. The targeted group was public school students were in 7th, 8th, and 9th grades. The program was named The Ambassadors of Ambition Mentoring Pro- gram.
Businessman Charles Leroy Thomas (7/20/1920 - -- 12/3/2016) died following a lengthy illness. Mr. Thomas served in the military and was a member of the historic “Triple Nickles” Smoke jumpers unit, a businessman, and a Civil Rights leader.
A portion of E. 25th Avenue was renamed Bishop Eddie Newkirk, Jr., Way. Bishop Newkirk led the congrega- tion of St. John Cathedral for more than 45 years.
President Barack Obama reduced the federal prison sentences of 1,176 indi- viduals, 395 of which were fac- ing life sentences. He also pardoned 148 people, offering a second chance to a total of 1,324 people. His record of granting clemency is unrivaled by any other U. S. President.
Mr. Randolph Kinsey, a longtime Sentinel Columnist, political activist, and retired educator, and businessman died after a lengthy illness. Mr. Kinsey was 78-years- old.
Ms. Marion Holiday Jones (October 29, 1937 to December 14, 2016) died fol- lowing a brief illness. Ms. Jones was a popular hair styl- ist who served the Tampa community for more than 60 years.
A horrific accident that left a man dead occurred early Wednesday at a City of Tampa facility. The accidental death took place at 6:30 a.m.
Pablo Femenias, 52, of Tampa, was trapped between the dump truck he was driving and the front end loader driven by 46-year-old Gre- gory N. Robinson.
Femenias died at the scene. The accident occurred at the City of Tampa Waste Water Sweeper Facility, 2708 Maritime Blvd.
Ms. Tierra Allen learned that she was pregnant on Fa- ther’s Day after she took a pregnancy test. When she went to the doctor a few weeks later, she learned that she was going to have triplets. Her daughter, Zenobia, and two sons, Zamar and Zakar, were delivered by C-Section on
Christmas Day. She is a first- time mother.
Anissa Platt, 18, a skilled horsewoman who’s on track to becoming a professional barrel
racer. She will perform in April at the Bill Pickett Invitational Rodeo, in Memphis.
Reverend Larry James Mouton, Jr., was chosen to serve as the Senior Pastor of New Hope Missionary Baptist Church.
Attorney Rena Frazier
was chosen to serve as the Chief of Policy and Communi- cations. She will act as the new Public Information Officer Di- rector, and Community Out- reach Coordinator. She was hired by newly elected Hills- borough County State Attor- ney Andrew Warren.
Bishop
Williams, Senior Pastor of Brown Memorial Church of God In Christ was elected to the 2016 General Assembly, the highest board in the Church Of God In Christ or- ganization. He was chosen during their 109th Convocation in St. Louis, Missouri.
Ms. Theresa Manuel
(January 7, 1926 to November 21, 2016) died. Ms. Manuel became the first African Amer- ican woman from Florida to represent the United States at the Olympics in 1948, in Lon- don. She was 9o years old.
The Hillsborough County School Board welcomed two new School Board Members and two returning School Board Members during the swearing-in ceremony on Tuesday, November 22.
Mrs. Lynn Gray was sworn in to represent District 7 Countywide. Ms. Tamara Shamburger was elected in the November General Elec- tion and was sworn in to rep- resent District 5.
