NAACP Sues Dept. Of Homeland Security On Behalf Of Haitian Immigrants
San Francisco Board Ousts First Black Woman Mayor; But Move Pushes Her Up In Poll
SAN FRANCISCO, CA — After the death of San Fran- cisco's Mayor Edwin Lee at the end of last year, the city's leadership fell to London Breed who became San Fran- cisco's first black woman mayor.
However, her role as interim mayor was taken away by the San Francisco Board of Super- visors last week when they voted 7-2 to elect Supervisor Mark Farrell. He becomes the third mayor of the city in six weeks. The board also voted 5-4 to oust Breed as in- terim mayor.
Although, the Board of Su- pervisors upon which she served as chair, thought they were causing her a political setback, has morphed into a
LONDON BREED
lead in the polls.
According to a new poll, she
is now the new frontrunner in the San Francisco mayor’s race. It seems to sig-
nal a dramatic reversal of for- tunes.
The newly released Cham- ber of Commerce poll shows Breed as the top choice of 33 percent of the voters in the upcoming mayor’s race. That’s a 2-1 lead over rivals.
“It seems like there is a lot of momentum for my cam- paign,” said Breed. “People are just calling us, stopping by the office.”
Indeed the fear of Breed getting such an edge with the public was one reason her op- ponents on the Board of Su- pervisors voted to remove her and replace her with Mark Farrell, who is not running. The idea was to level the play- ing field and they are not backing down.
Haiti was partially destroyed after a devastating earthquake and 59,000 immigrants were able to flee to the U.S. Now, Acting Homeland Security Secretary Elaine Duke says they must leave the U. S. by July 2019 or apply for different immigration status.
The NAACP is suing the Department of Homeland Se- curity (DHS) after its decision to cancel a temporary resi- dence program that's allowed nearly 59,000 Haitians to live and work in the United States.
The lawsuit — filed in the U.S. District Court for the Dis- trict of Maryland by the NAACP Legal Defense Fund — accuses the agency of tak- ing irrational and discrimina- tory action and argues it was "an egregious departure from the [Temporary Pro- tected Status] statute's re- quirements and an intent to discriminate on the basis of race."
Sherrilyn Ifill, president and director-counsel of the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, called it a "simple case."
"Our democracy rests on the bedrock principle that every person is equal before the law," Ifill said in a state- ment.
"Governmental deci- sions that target people based on racial discrimination vio-
late our Constitution."
The president and CEO of
the NAACP said that the ac- tion by DHS was "clearly racially motivated."
“The U.S. Constitution p r o hibits singling out certain immigrants for harsh treat- ment based on their skin color and/or ethnicity. But more than that, basic fairness mili- tates against this draconian action taken by DHS under the direction of President Trump," Derrick John- son said.
Acting Homeland Security Secretary Elaine Duke gave Haitians living with tempo- rary protected status (TPS) until July 22, 2019, to either leave the country or apply for a different legal immigration category.
Under TPS, citizens of des- ignated countries that have undergone a major natural or man-made disaster are al- lowed to conditionally remain in the United States legally until their home nations re- cover.
