Larry Washington Named City Of Tampa’s Director Of Solid Waste Department

Last Thursday, December 16, 2021, Tampa City Council voted to approve Mayor Jane Castor’s choice for di- rector of the Solid Waste de- partment.

was officially approved as the new Director of the Depart- ment of Solid Waste & Envi- ronmental Management. He replaces former director, Mark Wilfalk, who took over the Solid Waste depart- ment in Houston, TX.
Washington was named Interim Director in late Sep- tember of this year. Only 10 days before, he had been named Chief of Operations on September 20, 2021. He started at the City of Tampa in the Transportation Depart- ment in 2019.
Washington’s rapid rise reflects his professionalism and dedication to the job.
“Mark Wilfalk was a Solid Waste success story. Just as he worked his way up, I am doing the same. I want to continue the successful programs he started, while integrating fresh ideas.”

Washington urges the
public to keep their eyes open for new initiatives coming up in the new year.
The last project that Wil- falk and Washington worked on was also approved this Thursday. There were sev- eral ordinances that had not been updated in over 20 years. The new ordinances will be up for a vote in January.
Washington is also eager to work with the Parks and Recreation Department to plan more clean-ups in 2022.
Washington, 34, has a bachelor’s degree in Sociology from the University of Tampa, and a Master of Public Admin- istration (MPA) from the Uni- versity of South Florida’s School of Public Affairs. He previously modeled and ap- peared in several advertise- ments.
