10-Year-Old Hit By Stray Bullet At Cuscaden Park

A 10-year-old boy is recov- ering from a gunshot wound to his left leg. He was shot while watching a football game at a local park on Saturday.
Ms. Corine Copeland, the grandmother of Johnel and Jaquez Lawson, said the boys play football for the Bay Area Eagles and were at Cusca- den Park, 2900 N. 15th Street, on Saturday afternoon.

At the time of the shooting, Jaquez, 10, had played and was sitting on his bicycle near the fence. An unidentified sus- pect began sh0oting and Jaquez was struck in the leg by gunfire. He was transported to a local hospital, where he was treated and released.
Ms. Copeland said Jaquez had already played in his game and was watching his 11-year-old brother playing when he was shot.
“He has two holes in his leg and he’s on pain medication for now, but we don’t know if he is going to have any nerve damage or other problems,” she said.

According to the Tampa Police Department, Jaquez was shot in the left leg by a small caliber bullet. Tampa Fire Rescue responded to the scene and transported him.
Police said that during the initial investigation, officers were unable to locate any eye- witnesses to the shooting or anyone who heard a gunshot. Detectives are still actively in- vestigating the shooting.
