Blacks In The Bible: Part One
or those of us who are Christians, the Bible is a major Black History
book (especially the Old Testa- ment) that I hope you dis- cussed during Black History month. Think about it. When- ever we study and discuss chapters of the Old Testament, practically every major Biblical character is Black. This has been proven by Science, Geog- raphy, Archeology, and An- thropology.
From my childhood, I often wondered how Joseph and Mary could hide in Egypt with a large dark-skinned popula- tion. I also wondered what color was Moses’ hand before he put it in his bosom. More- over, I tried to envision how Adam and Eve were created from white dirt or sand.
Scientifically, molecular genetics showed that an an- cient hunter – gatherer found in a cave had dark skin and blue eyes. A 2013 analysis of the man who lived in modern day Spain about 7,000 years ago “showed light skin genes in Europeans evolved much more recently than previously thought.”
A Spanish palaeogenomics researcher found that light skin evolved not to lower light conditions in Europe as com- pared to Africa, but rather the new diet that emerged after migration. In addition, the studies found that “some human beings lived consider- ably longer than thought in Europe before losing the dark pigmentation that evolved under Africa’s sun.”
A new analysis of the hunter-gatherer shows the man had the gene mutation for blue eyes, but not the Euro- peans gene for light skin. Thus, white skin developed in Eu- rope only as recently as 8,000 years ago.
When studying the geo- graphical references in Gene- sis and the rest of the Old Testament, the presence of Blacks in the Bible are con- firmed by the reference to African countries and scrip- ture characters’ personal ad- mission.
Africa is mentioned more times than any other landmass in the Bible. Ethiopia is men- tioned 45 times while Egypt/Egyptians are men- tioned 45 times. Kush (Cush) was named after Noah’s old- est son and Canaan was named after Noah’s grand-
son.
Today, those countries are
located in modern-day Sudan, Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, Iraq, and Israel-Palestine, all popu- lated by dark-skinned people. The oldest human remains were found in Ethiopia in 1974, confirming that the birthplace of humanity was in east Africa.
In Genesis, the descrip- tion of the Garden of Eden as being near a four-river system in the regions of the lands of Kush (Cush), Havilah, and Asshur, today would be near Eastern Sudan, Ethiopia, and Eritrea.
Moreover, the city of Ur (pronounced “your” and men- tioned three times in Genesis 11:28, 31 and 15:7 and once in Nehemiah 9:7) which Abram (Abraham/ mean- ing “First Black”) migrated from was an important trade
center located at the meeting of the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers and the Persian Gulf.
Today, Iraq is the name of that land. Archeological exca- vations in that area show that red-skinned, tan and dark- skinned people populated the area.
Biblical scenes painted by first and second century perse- cuted Christians in the Roman Catacombs show people of color. Remaining paintings and icons from attempts to de- stroy the truth were saved and are located in museums today. Early pictures of Black Saints, Black Madonna and child, and other Black Biblical char- acters in paintings and sculp- ture may be found in museums today.
Among the resources I used, the African American Jubilee Bible was an excel- lent source of information.
Part Two of Blacks in the Bible will discuss the archeological and anthropo- logical confirmation of the Black presence in the Bible. Harrambee!
