House Speaker Pelosi Reelected As Democratic Leader
Obama's Highly Anticipated Book 'A Promised Land' Sells 890,000 Copies On Its First Day
Barack Obama is well on his way to becoming the best selling author of the year.
It is a title previously be- stowed on his wife, Michelle Obama, whose book "Becom- ing" rocketed to the top of the charts in 2018.
Now the former president's new memoir, "A Promised Land," is breaking records for the book's publisher, Crown, an imprint of Penguin Random House.
Hundreds of thousands of people pre-ordered "A Prom- ised Land" ahead of Tuesday's release date.
Those pre-order sales, plus first-day sales, totaled 887,000 units "in all formats and edi- tions in the U. S. and Canada," Penguin Random House said on Wednesday.
The publisher said this re- sult represented "the largest first-day sales total for any book ever published" by the company.
Penguin and the rest of the publishing industry antici- pated this moment: Obama's memoir, the first of two ex- pected volumes, has been the

place until the new Congress is sworn in.
The fact that Pelosi is ex- pected to remain on as speaker is a sign of how strong her hold is over House De- mocrats even after they suf- fered disappointing losses in the 2020 elections.
Top House Democrats had confidently predicted they would expand their majority only to instead see a number of incumbents ousted by Re- publicans, who are now em- boldened and on the offensive, though they are still in the minority.

Canada, Crown printed 3.4 million copies of the hardcover edition.
Barnes & Noble CEO James Daunt told Publishers Weekly earlier in the year, "This will be a book of rare consequence. That it will sell as no other book has done since July 21, 2007" — when "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" came out — "is immensely cheering to booksellers."
Joe Biden Is Moving On With The Presidential Transition With A Diverse White House Staff
President-elect Joe Biden’s senior White House staff will include several close, longtime advisers and will be a first step toward his prom- ises of a diverse administra- tion.

Victor Glover Becomes First Black Astronaut To Embark On Long Term Stay At International Space Station
Just a day after blasting off for his mission aboard the SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule “Resilience” on Sunday, NASA astronaut Victor Glover became the first Black person to embark on a long-term stay at the Interna- tional Space Station.
Glover, along with fellow NASA astronauts Mike Hopkins and Shannon Walker, and Soichi Noguchi of Japan, arrived Monday night (Nov. 16) after a 27-hour trip, according to Space.com.
The ISS has had residents on the orbiting space plat- form for two decades now.

However, Glover, 44, a U. S. Navy commander and test pilot, is the first African American to stay there long term. Other Blacks have been to the station before but were only there on space shuttle
missions while it was being constructed. He is one of 15 Black astronauts out of 300 people that NASA has sent to space.
"It is something to be cel- ebrated once we accomplish it, and, you know, I am hon- ored to be in this position and to be a part of this great and experienced crew," Glover said at a news conference a week ago, reported Space.com. "And I look for- ward to getting up there and doing my best to make sure that, you know, we are wor- thy of all the work that's been put into setting us up for this mission."
