St. Peter Claver Celebrates 125th Anniversary
Historic St. Peter Claver Catholic Church and School began celebration of its 125th anniversary in September, 2018. The celebration will culminate with a formal Black and White Ball on Saturday, February 23, 2019, 6 p. m. – 11 p. m., at the Tampa Mar- riott Westshore, 1001 N. Westshore Boulevard, Tampa.
In celebration of the occa- sion, Mr. Edward John- son, Mayor of Fayetteville, NC, will be the guest speaker. Mayor Johnson is a native of New Orleans, Louisiana and a retired U. S. Navy Com- mander.
Currently, he serves as pastor of Flat Rock African Methodist Episcopal Church in the Fayetteville area. Alumni and the general public are invited to join in the fes- tivities. The reception begins at 6 p. m., followed by dinner and dancing. Additional infor- mation is available at the church office, (813) 223-7098.
In 1894 the St. Peter Claver Church and School were founded, and for the en- suing 125 years have been the spiritual and educational foundation of many families in the Tampa Bay Area.
Today, both institutions continue to be a cultural and inspirational haven for gener- ations gone and a sacred path for those who believe in the mission.
During 2018, various church ministries sponsored community recognition events to promote the 125th anniversary. On September 8-9, 2018, St. Peter Claver Day was celebrated with a pic- nic on the school grounds and

Most Reverend Gregory L. Parkes, Bishop of the Dio- cese of St. Petersburg, officiat- ing.
Parishioners and guests welcomed Msgr. Anseim Nwaorgu, Ph.D., of the Archdiocese of Newark, New Jersey, for a 3-day revival on October 12-14. Monsignor Nwaorgu engaged all in the scholarly, cultural and doctri- nal values of the faith. “Decades of Excellence” was the theme of the school’s Gala held on November 10th, where the debut of the church and school history video, chroni- cling the very early days to the present, was featured.
Ms. Barbara Grate is President of the St. Peter Claver Finance Council, spon- sor of the Black and White Ball. Philip Manor is Chair- man of the Ball; members of the Finance Council are Sonja Garcia, Gladys Jackson, Conrad Johnson and Ethel Kamga. Father Hugh Chikawe is Pastor; Sister Maria Babatunde is Principal.

The American Association of University Women (AAUW) Tampa is hosting its annual fundraiser luncheon at Tampa Palms Golf and Country Club (5811 Tampa Palms Blvd., Tampa, Florida, 33647) on Saturday February, 23rd from 11 a. m.-2 p. m.

and Sargent Smith Middle School Orchestra, with Joseph Grady, conductor. Additionally, there will be basket drawings and a silent auction, book sales, including the works of award-winning authors such as Debora Coty and John Chaplick.
The doors will open at 10 a. m. to give attendees time to check-in, browse, and net- work.
