Youngest Female Chick-fil-A Owner To Open First Store In Downtown L.A.
LOS ANGELES, CA —— Chick-fil-A franchise owner, Ashley Lamothe Derby, 31, was awarded the com- pany’s Symbol of Success, an honor reserved for Chick-fil- A operators whose busi- nesses experience particularly high sales growth. Derby is the owner and operator of a Chick-fil-A near the University of South- ern California in Los Angeles.
She began her career with Chick-fil-A at age 15, work- ing at a restaurant in her hometown of Marietta, Georgia. After entering Spel- man College, she began

working at a Chick-fil-A near campus. Noticing her work ethic, her restaurant opera- tor pulled her aside and sug-
gested that she consider a ca- reer in leadership with the company. She changed her major from theater to eco- nomics.
After graduating from Spelman in 2006, she spent the next three years complet- ing numerous Chick-fil-A management and develop- ment programs. In 2011, at age 26, she became the youngest African-American female franchise owner in the history of the company.
The Atlanta native will soon open the very first Chick-fil-A location in down- town Los Angeles soon.
On August 21, a total solar eclipse will sweep across America, casting millions of people into temporary dark- ness. It will be the biggest as- tronomical event America has seen in almost a century, watched by millions of people from within the path of total- ity and tens of millions more who are outside it. One as- tronomer has said it will be the “most photographed, most shared, most tweeted event in human history.”

The moon's shadow first hits land north of Newport, Ore., at 10:15 a.m. Pacific time. It will then make its way southeast through Idaho, Wyoming, Nebraska, Kansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina. The shadow will leave the continental United States close to Charleston, S.C., at about 2:49 p.m. Eastern time.
Young Father Killed By Gunmen On Church Steps
CHICAGO, -IL —- On Sunday morning, two gun- men wearing bandanas ran towards a church shooting and killing two men.
Emmanuel Flemming and Michael Swift, 46, were killed walking up the steps of South Austin’s Friendship Baptist Church.
Flemming was an usher at the church and was taking his three kids to church, who are all under the age of 10. Swift who was not a member of the church was only visit- ing.
According to witnesses, the gunmen ran from a gas station across the street and began opening fire on the church.

was shocked by the event and told the Chicago Tribune, “It’s just hard for me to be- lieve that something like this could happen on a Sunday morning. Two young men on their way to church...I think that’s the hardest part for me to grasp.”
According to officials, the gunmen got away.

DURHAM, NC —- Pro- testers in North Carolina have toppled a long-standing statue of a Confederate sol- dier.
Activists on Monday evening used a rope to pull down the monument outside a Durham courthouse. Video footage posted online shows protesters — some white, some black — kicking the crumpled bronze statue as dozens of people in the crowd cheered and chanted.
The Durham protest was in response to a white nation- alist rally held in Char- lottesville, Virginia, over the weekend. Authorities say one woman was killed Saturday after one of the white nation- alists drove his car into a group of peaceful counter- protesters.

President Trump finally called out neo-Nazis or white supremacists days after the Charlottesville tragedy — but he named and shamed Merck Drug Company’s African- American CEO.
Kenneth Frazier, head of the pharmaceutical giant, quit the American Manufacturing Council in protest of Trump’s highly criticized response to the violence in Charlottesville, Va.
Trump fired back in a tweeted response less than an hour after the announcement.
“Now that Ken Frazier of Merck Pharma has resigned from President's Manufactur- ing Council, he will have more time to LOWER RIPOFF
DRUG PRICES!” Trump tweeted.
More CEO’s have followed Frazier’s lead and have re- signed too.
Intel's Brian Krzanich and Under Armour head Kevin Plank have followed Merck's Ken Frazier in leaving the council.
Plank sent out a tweet on Monday condemning racism.
"We are saddened by #Charlottesville. There is no place for racism or discrimina- tion in this world. We choose love & unity."
Ten hours later, Plank re- leased another statement on Under Armour's Twitter ac- count announcing his resigna- tion from the advisory body.
