On April 30th, family mem- bers and friends gathered to help a local educator celebrate her retirement. She ended that chapter of her life of service to the children of Hillsborough County.
A Tampa native, Mrs. Cheryl Byrd Washington selected the slogan, “Good- bye Tension, Hello Pen- sion,” as the theme for her
retirement. The theme was both fitting and proper be- cause it signifies a lifetime of dedication that spanned 41 years.
Mrs. Washington at- tended the public schools of Hillsborough County. She graduated from Hillsborough High School in 1971, and con- tinued her education at Florida A & M University. After earning a B. S. in Psy- chology, she returned to Tampa.
She also obtained her Mas- ter’s in Education with Specific Learning Disabilities from the University of South Florida.
In 1976, she joined the Hillsborough County School District as an Assistant Teacher at Eisenhower Middle School. She was elevated to teacher the following year.
During her career, Mrs. Washington has served as EMH Teacher, Student Inter- vention Specialist, Dropout Prevention Specialist, and re- tired as the Success Student Coach at Adams Middle School.
Mrs. Washington said, “I have enjoyed working in the Hillsborough County School District. It has provided me se- curity and I have enjoyed working with a very diverse student population through-
out my career.
“I will miss my colleagues.
I have made many friends dur- ing the years who I will miss dearly. But, my retirement gives me an opportunity to do some of the other things that I enjoy such as spending time with my family, traveling, vol- unteering, and just taking life as it comes.”
Mrs. Washington, who is a licensed hair stylist, is the daughter of Mrs. Hattie Byrd White, the wife of Henry “Shake” Washing- ton, and the mother of
Henry “Too Boy” Wash- ington, Jr., and Dr. JaMia Washington. She is also a grandmother.
She is a member of Allen Temple A. M. E. Church and also plans to be more active at church and in her sorority, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.
Mrs. Washington lists among her hobbies reading, line dancing, playing cards, and enjoying spending time with her friends. She also plans to help out in her mom’s beauty shop.
