Plant High’s Hidden Talent
Plant High School stu- dent Alexis Perno has big dreams after her gradua- tion, pursuing the career of an author and a poet. This talented ninth grader has wowed her teachers with her incredible short stories and poetry.
Recently, her Semantics and Logics classmates rose to a standing ovation to ap- plaud her poetry perform- ance in a classroom presentation.
Alexis is no stranger to writing. She participates in a two-week rigorous writing camp called ICE Writers.
Additionally, she won second place at Plant's Po- etry Jam and first place with a literary piece in the school's PTSA Reflections contest.
Transitioning her mid- dle school involvement to where she is today, she has remained with the Best Buddies Program.
"Alexis is an outstand- ing writer," says her Seman-

“The Song of the Hands” By Alexis Pernos
Inspired by Nikki Giovanni
It is appropriate I sing
the song of the Hands
I am a tool to be used for evil or for good to bring joy or fear
I have crossed mountains and overcome vast oceans brought people of all kinds together
have ended wars and created masterpieces
Through me, I have brought life to earth
On rainy days I plucked at guitar strings, but have also loaded a rifle in the mud.
I have cradled my newborn close to my chest and have been restrained by judgmental cuffs
Through me, I have brought death to earth
I cannot choose whether I take or give in this world the decision is not up to me
but instead falls to those who carry my weight
It is appropriate I sing the warning of the hands
I am Human.
