BY GWEN HAYES Sentinel Editor
Students and parents, as well as adult chaperones, are still talking about the college tour they went on a few weeks ago.
Members of the Greater Tampa Chapter of Jack and Jill of America, Inc. recently trav- eled to Tallahassee for the Florida A & M University Spring Preview held on Satur- day, February 20, 2016. The trip was organized by Mt. Olive Community Development, Inc. and coordinated by Dayle Greene, a FAMU alumnus, with the assistance of Patsy Greene, who made the trip for the first time; Gilene Janvier and Keith King, Coordinators of the College Awareness Work- shop.
During this enlightening event, students and parents learned about FAMU’s rich his- tory and culture and the out- standing degree programs. They met with faculty, admin- istrators, and current students and toured the campus. They learned what the prerequisites are for specific programs as well as the career opportunities in those fields.
Representatives from ad-
Heather Haggins, a student at Howard W. Blake High School, learned during the trip that she had been accepted to FAMU. This was her first trip out of Tampa. She chatted with O’Hara Hannah, Recruiter for the FAMU School of Business and Industry.
missions, financial aid, hous- ing, and student dining were also available to provide infor- mation and answer questions. Scholarships were offered on- site to high school juniors and seniors based on their current academic achievements.
Kaia Floyd of Jack and Jill was offered a scholarship.
Cindy Gipson, a descen- dant of the Big John (Stephens) Alabama Bar-B-Que family, gave the students some realistic expectations of college life, es- pecially in the classroom. She is a Math professor at FAMU and the sister of Amy Gipson.
The group ended the trip
with a private tour of the School of Journalism and Graphics Communication, met with the Dean, and spoke with current FAMU students from the Tampa Bay area. The event was outstanding and is sure to leave a lasting impression on all that attended.
