Wrong Way Driver Arrested After 10-Mile Chase
A wrong way driver is fac- ing multiple charges stemming from an incident that took place Tuesday night. The inci- dent began after police re- ceived three simultaneous calls about a black pickup truck traveling in the wrong direc- tion.
According to a spokesper- son for the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office, the 9- 1-1 calls were received at 9:30 p.m. The callers told police the truck was traveling north- bound in the southbound lanes of U. S. Highway 301, just south of County Road 674.
A patrol deputy in the area came in contact with the vehi- cle, identified as a 2002 Dodge Durango, 4 x 4. The deputy ac- tivated his emergency lights and began to parallel the vehi- cle from the proper lane in an effort to alert oncoming traffic.
The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office Aviation Divi- sion was also notified and de- ployed.
Other deputies in the area were dispatched to the area and stopped the southbound traffic in the path of the truck. The black truck continued northbound on U. S. 301 in the wrong lane and ran through the Big Bend Road traffic light.
As the driver reached County Road 672, the driver of the black truck crossed the me- dian back into the northbound lane of traffic. At this point, he

allegedly began throwing items from the truck.
At this point, deputies were instructed to fall back and wait for the helicopter. However, the driver quickly crossed the median and began driving in the wrong lane of oncoming traffic again. At this point, po- lice determined he was an im- minent threat to motorists.
The driver gave no indica- tion that he intended to stop as he traveled on U. S. 301 in the wrong direction again.
Deputies dispatched in front of the black truck placed Stop Sticks between Rhodine Road and Symmes Road on U. S. 301. When the black truck reached that location, the front right tire was punctured. How- ever, the driver continued without stopping.
As the black truck ap- proached Murphy Road and U.
S. 301, deputies observed that the driver was intentionally driving directly toward oncom- ing traffic.
At that point, the deputies rammed the truck using the Precision Immobilization Technique (PIT) that resulted in the vehicle going into a spin and temporarily stopping.
As deputies attempted to surround the truck with their patrol cars, the driver rammed a marked vehicle. However, they were successful in block- ing him in and preventing him from driving off.
Police arrested 20-year-old Derek Wayne Hyde without further incident. He was trans- ported to the Hillsborough County Jail, where he was charged with aggravated bat- tery of a law enforcement offi- cer, fleeing and eluding, reckless driving, and posses- sion of drug paraphernalia. His bond was set at $20,250.
After his arrest, police dis- covered a large bag weighing approximately 1 pound inside the vehicle. It was an unknown white, granular, powdery sub- stance packaged similar to nar- cotics. The substance could not be identified at the scene and was sent to the laboratory for testing, police said.
Hyde refused to submit to a BAC and urine test. The in- vestigation is continuing and other charges may be pending, police said.
In what Tampa Police have described as a dispute, a 22- year-old man was killed, and a 17-year-old male was injured.
At 7:48 p. m. Monday, po- lice were called to the Gardens at Southbay Apartments, 6720 South Lois Avenue.
When they arrived, they found Jamil Marquis Col- lier and Cameron Mylik Denson suffering from gun- shot wounds.
Collier, 22, was pro- nounced dead at the scene, and Denson was transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Police said the shootings were not random and appear to be related to an ongoing dis- pute.
