FLORIDA SENTINEL FRIDAY, JULY 16, 2021 B Progress Village Community Celebrates 60th Anniversary
On Saturday, June 19th, Progress Village chose June- teenth to celebrate its 60th Anniversary of being a com- munity. What started out in 1960 as a community to pro- vide opportunities for home ownership geared towards African Americans, truly evolved into a Village.
The celebration which was delayed a year due to COVID-19 was a huge suc-
cess. Hundreds of current and former residents at- tended traveling near and far. Free barbeque with all the fixings was provided for everyone along with good music, dancing and a whole lot of reuniting with old neighbors, classmates and friends.
In addition to the cook out, Progress Village kicked off a week-long community clean
up drive (Fight the Blight) with the help of BOCC, Solid Waste, Code Enforcement and HCSO. The clean-up was a success with tons of "stuff" being removed from the com- munity. The week ended with new mulch being put down at the Simmons-Bowers Park.
This was a busy week for the community that takes pride in "Keeping Progress in the Village."
