Nikolas Cruz is accused of walking into the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School at 2:30 p.m. He is said to have pulled the fire alarm and opened up with a AK-15 as students and teachers filed out.
In the aftermath of the shooting, 14 students and 3 teachers were killed. An addi- tional 14 others injured.
The shooting has once again brought the subject of gun control to the forefront. Many people are calling for a ban on assault-type rifles and the sale of bump stocks.
Monday, the State Senate narrowly passed legislation pertaining to gun control. If signed by the governor, the bill increases the age in which firearms can be purchased, im- poses a 3-day waiting period on certain firearms, and bans the sale of bump stocks.

said, “I pray that the legislators pass gun control measures that will demand stricter guidelines to purchase any type of weapon, especially assault ri- fles. No one seems to want to address the NRA or stop taking contributions from them for their political gain.
“I have fought tirelessly for the past 23 years against gun violence. However, the number of senseless killings continue to grow week after week and month after month. It is so sad

She continued to say, “In addition to illegal guns being plentiful on the street, they can also be obtained at gun shows, pawn shops, and in unsecured cars for guns to land in the hands of the wrong person.”
For several years, Mrs. Heyward has held annual candlelight vigils for the vic- tims of gun violence.
She further suggested that parents talk to their children about gun safety. If ‘someone sees something, say some- thing.’
“Parents should also warn their children about making threats to harm anyone be- cause they could be arrested, especially if it is pertaining to school.
“This is not a joke. This is serious, so take all precautions necessary to help prevent an- other tragedy. The time is now to help put a stop to gun vio- lence in our communities,” she said.
