Four Area Families Are Among America’s ‘Richest’
FORBES magazine’s sec- ond annual ranking of Amer- ica’s 200 Richest Families includes 4 area families.
The Jenkins family com- pany is home based in Lake- land, but members of the family live in Tampa. They are the owners of Publix Su- permarkets. They ranked the highest on the list at #43 with net worth of $6.5 bil- lion. Publix was started by Mr. George Jenkins and has benefited from a loyal customer base. But, the chain is also partly owned by em- ployees.
The Glazers are the own- ers of the Tampa Bay Bucca- neers and Manchester soccer team, ranked #63 at $4.7 bil- lion; the Steinbrenners are owners of the New York Yankees baseball team are
#75 on the list at $3.8 bil- lion; and the Lykes family are real estate, insurance, ranch and citrus grove own- ers ranked#193 at $1.2 bil- lion.
The family that topped the list is the Walton family in Bentonville, Arkansas, own- ers of Wal-Mart at $149 bil- lion. The Walton family is
the wealthiest family in the U. S. for the second year in a row. Six heirs of Wal-Mart founders Sam Walton and James “Bud” Walton to- gether own about 54% of the global retailer. Forbes esti- mates their fortune at $149 billion — down from $152 billion last year due to a dip in Wal-Mart’s stock price.

ACLU Conducting Investigation Into Bicycle Citations
JOYCE HAMILTON HENRY Director Of Advocacy For The Mid-Florida Office Of the ACLU
BY LEON B. CREWS Sentinel Staff Writer
Joyce Hamilton-Henry, Director of Advocacy for the Mid-Florida Regional Office of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), attended the forum last week hosted by the Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Virginia Center for Policing Innovation (VCPI).
Ms. Hamilton-Henry
said in her opinion, the forum accomplished its purpose.
“Our concern is about the procedures being used by Tampa Police. We’ve submit- ted a public records request and we’re conducting our own investigation into the bicycle stops.
“We’ve always felt DOJ’s Civil Rights Division should have been involved and we’re concerned about the number of young people impacted by this practice and what it’s doing to their future.”
Ms. Hamilton-Henry
said the “Stop, Frisk, and Search” practice has been adopted by law enforcement agencies across the country, and the ACLU doesn’t want this in Tampa.
“Nationally, we’ve always been concerned about this practice, and perhaps Police Chief Eric Ward should con- sider stopping it until this re- view has been completed.
“We hope the fact-finding mission last week was success- ful, and we don’t know when any results of that forum will be made public by DOJ and VCPI.”
