District 5 City Council Candidates Impressive In Their Delivery
The 5 candidates in City Council District 5 were im- pressive in their presentation to the Sentinel’s Editorial Board. All of the candidates running for this position are African-American – 4 males and 1 female.
One of the questions posed to the candidates once elected was what would be the first item on their agenda?
Orlando Gudes, co- owner of a
funeral
business
and a for-
mer police
officer, said
employ-
ment would be first on his agenda. Finding ways and the funds to get people em- ployed would be the chal- lenge.
Jeffrey Rhodes, co- owner of a local funeral busi- ness, said affordable housing
was tops on
his list, es-
pecially in
Sulphur
Springs
area. He
added that
affordable housing is not the $180,000 home.
Running a grassroots campaign, Ella Coffee said she has
been knock-
ing on
doors to let
voters know
who she is.
Having
been a rider of public trans- portation, her first item to tackle as a new Council mem- ber would be transportation.
“The Computer Guy,”
Ralph Smith stated that finding re- sources for rentable, af-
fordable housing would also top his list once elected.
Todd (TC) Cole, mem- berofa
prominent
business
family, said
he’d like to
be a good
public ser-
vant. His concern is for “blighted areas that need to be handled, but not by the heavy hands of Code En- forcement. We need to get on the property owners.”
Either of the 5 candidates for District 5 will serve well, if elected. All come with some great ideas to uplift the dis- trict. They’re all excited about the new tax that should pump $34 million into the community for sidewalks and other safety measures.
This was a tough decision for the Editorial Board. The vote was split with Rhodes edging out Gudes.
