The American Association of University Women (AAUW) Tampa Branch celebrated its 100th Anniversary with a schol- arship fundraiser luncheon on Saturday, September 10th at the Tampa Palms Golf and Country Club. The Tampa branch is the oldest branch in the State of Florida.
To help commemorate the occasion, the AAUW Florida President Mrs. Shirley Reid spoke to lay the foundation for the day’s celebration. John Chaplick, MC, opened the event with a moment of silence for victims of the 9/11 casualty, their families, and friends, which was followed by a beau- tiful and moving rendition of the national anthem sang by Mrs. Ericka Reynolds.
Five community leaders were recipients of the inaugu- ral Ribbon of Honor Award given for their exemplary lead- ership in implementing and or promoting the principles of ad- vocacy, education, philan- thropy, and research.
The recipients included
Mrs. Avis Chaplick, 51-year AAUW member, Mrs. Sonja Garcia, retired library admin- istrator for the University of South Florida, Mrs. Betty Reed, Dr. Ara Rogers, Di- rector of the Osher Lifelong Learning institute, University of South Florida, and Mrs. Doris Weatherford, local author and historian of the woman’s role in history.
Mrs. Sonja Garcia was the keynote speaker. Her in- formative and moving address illuminated the need for com- munity organizations and lead- ers to continue to work together in advocating for women and girls in the com- munity and across the nation.
Eighty-eight community leaders and friends of AAUW Tampa helped the Tampa branch meet its scholarship goals for the year as they en- joyed the luncheon and music of Mrs. Betty Chester, local piano instructor and per- former and vocalist and local nurse, Mrs. Ericka Reynolds.
