Street To Be Named For Teen Killed By Police
On October 24, 1996, two St. Petersburg Police officers stopped 18-year-old TyRon Lewis and an associate for what the police said was a traf- fic violation.
After Lewis stopped, the of- ficers said they ordered him to get out of the car. Before he could get out of the car, wit- nesses alleged they saw Offi- cer James Knight shoot Lewis twice through the wind- shield. As a result, the African American community rebelled in outrage of the shooting that occurred two blocks from the Uhuru House.
On October 24, 2016 at 7 p. m., 20 years after the killing of Lewis, the International Peo- ple’s Democratic Uhuru Move- ment (InPDUM) is taking the initiative to memorialize the
TYRON LEWIS
horrific event that day.
The memorial events will
start Sunday, October 23rd at Akwaaba Hall, 1245 18th Av- enue, South, at 4 p. m. with presentations and tributes to Lewis by family and friends, including TyRon Lewis, Jr., the son of the slain teenager; Kalabamyi Andenet, Inter-
national President of the In- PDUM, and Omali Yeshitela, Chairman of the African People’s Socialist Party.
On October 24th at 7 p. m., the community will celebrate the life of TyRon Lewis and recall events of 20 years ago with a brief rally, then candle- light vigil and march to the site of the murder on the corner of 18th Avenue, South and 16th Street.
The crown jewel of the vigil will be the renaming ceremony for 18th Avenue. A street sign will be erected bearing the name of TyRon Lewis. This historic occasion of African American people taking a small bit of control over the community will never be for- gotten.
Meals On Wheels Volunteers Take Part In ‘Produce On Wheels’ Program
Last Saturday, more than 100 community volunteers, businesses and groups partic- ipated in the Meals On Wheels of Tampa’s Produce On Wheels (POW) Program. The event was held in partnership with Feeding Tampa Bay.
Its purpose was to increase
access to fresh produce to the elderly, disabled, and home- bound citizens. The fresh pro- duce was delivered to 650 home meal delivery recipients.
The donation of the fresh produce was especially appre- ciated by the Meals On Wheels of Tampa Program. The goal
of the program is to ensure that elderly citizens, disabled citizens, and others who are homebound will receive nour- ishing food.
Volunteers delivered the pre-packaged bags of fresh produce to the recipients free of charge.
