Mayor To Host State Of City At Newly Designed Riverfront Park

On Friday, Mayor Bob Buck- horn will hold his State of the City address, beginning at 9:30 a.m. The event will take place at the newly de- signed Riverfront Park, 1001 North Blvd.
Mayor Buckhorn said, “This park truly has something for every- one. We look forward to decades from now, looking back on what will serve as the anchor for the West Tampa Redevelopment and remi- niscing on what will be a memorable weekend. So come out, bring your family and friends, and enjoy two full days of activities in Tampa’s new Riverfront Park. It has something to offer for everyone.”
The State of the City address will kick off a series of events to introduce the newly renovated park to the com- munity. The event is being billed as the “Riverfront Rock” weekend.

On Saturday, Third Eye Blind and the Navy Leap Frogs will be on hand with Mayor Buckhorn for the grand opening of the center.
The celebration offers a family- oriented fun day with bounce houses,
fireworks, face-painting, a splash pad, and other activities for children and adults. There will be water demonstrations.
Another highlight on Saturday will be the Mayor’s Cheese Throw- down, starting at 12 noon.
For the sports fanatics, the Tampa Bay Lightning, the Tampa Bay Rays, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and the Tampa Bay Rowdies will be in atten- dance.
Saturday’s day of events will end with an unforgettable fireworks dis- play.
The celebration continues on Sunday with Mayor Buckhorn, the Florida Orchestra, and the U. S. Navy Band. The day will once again be filled with activities for all ages. There will be kid friendly entertain- ment, and the sports organizations will return for the day as well.
For the grand finale, the Florida Orchestra will perform a free Pops in the Park Concert, at 7:30 p.m., on
Mother’s Day, Sunday, May 13th. The event is a free symphonic, Broadway and movie music under the stars. It will include the 1812 Overture and an explosive patriotic salute with fireworks.
The concert will also celebrate 50 years of the Florida Orchestra in Tampa Bay as the State’s premier and largest professional orchestra, under the leadership of Music Direc- tor Michael Francis, and under the baton of guest conductor Vince Lee.
The orchestra will also collect non-perishable food items for the Tampa Bay Harvest’s annual food drive.
