County Commissioners Approve School District Referendum To Appear On November 6, 2018 Ballot
On Thursday, September 6, the Hillsborough County Board of County Commissioners ful- filled its statutory duty to trans- mit ballot language to the Supervisor of Elections office for a half-penny sales tax referen- dum supporting schools for in- clusion on the November 6, 2018 ballot.
The referendum would gen- erate approximately $131 million per year for ten years that would be spent on specific projects to improve public schools. Projects are limited to air conditioning replacement, building and reno-
vating schools, maintenance, se- curity and technology.
The referendum would also create a seven-member Citizen Oversight Committee, which re- ports on the spending and progress of all of the money raised by the referendum. Six members of the Citizen Over- sight Committee would be pri- vate citizens who cannot be affiliated with the district and cannot work on projects funded by the referendum.
Sales tax is not charged on necessities like groceries and medicine.
