     Online Learning Continues To Boom
 From Scratch To Success
“Today is the day to scratch the surface of your real potential.”
-Selphenia Nichols Simmons
mpowered Greet-
ings. Many of you read- ing this column are working a 9 - 5 job that you don’t like. You look at your paycheck and feel underpaid and over- worked. Some of you may not have a job at all.
You desire more out of life than what you’ve gotten so far. There is a thought in the back of your mind to do something different, but you don’t know what. Or, maybe you feel dis- couraged because you don’t have financial resources.
I want to encourage you with the words of a song that says, “You don’t need a whole lot, just use what
you’ve got.”
It is with this premise that I have started every business I have ever owned. As an entre- preneur at heart, I believe that everything you own should be able to make money for you.
Here are 5 steps to get- ting started.
1. Take inventory of the gifts and talents that God has endowed you with.
2. Take inventory of the material possessions you have. 3. Creatively determine how they can be used to take
you to the next level in life.
4. Begin to view life through the eyes of others. Ob- serve people to see what prob- lems they are facing. Remember, no matter how small a problem is - it still de- mands a solution. That solu- tion, if developed by you, cannot only change that per-
son’s situation, but it can also change yours.
5. Ask God to open up your understanding and allow His creative power to flow through you.
My life is a testimony that you can go from scratch to suc- cess using these steps.

   nline learning started to
become popular in the early 80s with the progress of the internet speed and inven- tions of various security proto- cols. Many of us still remember the first commer- cials for the University of Phoenix online learning pro- grams. You couldn’t miss these impressionable commercials from the University of Phoenix. Give the University of Phoenix a lot of credit.
In the 80s learning online and getting a degree from a school thousands of miles away was still considered a joke. Then the Interactive Learning Network (ILN) was created and released to the bigger more established schools, such as Yale and Cor- nell. Interactive Learning is an important fundamental system which combines social net- working and urban computing into a course design with a de- livery system to students.
The ILN system has be- come so advance, digital media has been incorporated in on- line learning almost flawlessly. Students can view documen- taries, music and multimedia clips almost as if they were in the class room with no internet slow down or choppy interrup- tions. We see this progress by playing graphically intense games online as well.
Online nation has grown steadily in the last five years, roughly to the point of 9.7 per- cent growth which surpasses the 1.5 percent of overall higher education student pop- ulation.
Many schools use the pop- ular blackboard content which is basically a virtual collection of file repository that allows teachers and students to man-
age and share various learning modules such as a set of quizzes, practice exams, and homework assignments. Teachers have total control of the blackboard content; they can set specific time periods to complete an exam or submit a periodic assignment. Since the content is paperless, students have a smaller margin of cheating or submitting assign- ments late with weak excuses.
Online curriculums have grown to the point where al- most every major class is of- fered. However, most schools will only open a particular class if they feel at least ten students will enroll, so they won’t waste their money or time. In 2012, Udacity launched a comprehensive on- line education website which offers hundreds of university level programs and classes.
Today, many employers are willing to pay for online learn- ing for their employees, if they take classes outside of the work environment. Large com- panies will ask the employee to complete the particular course successfully. Employers will also ask the employee to demonstrate that they are will- ing to stay in their current job once they have finished the de- gree or course or they may have to pay back the loan or re- imbursement.
