Several years ago, a Tampa educator saw the need to mentor young male students. He launched the Men of Vision Serv- ice organization while teaching at Sligh Middle School.
From the outset Ross An- derson sought to help young male students develop into well- rounded adults. When he created the organization, his focus was on education as well as community. The organization is now on the campuses of schools on all levels in Hillsborough County.
Recently, Anderson was able to see the results of his dedication, commitment, and hard work. Twenty members of Men of Vision earned Honor Roll status. The young men attend Sligh Middle School, Van Buren Middle School, Legacy Prep, Gaither High School, Pareida School of Tampa Bay, and at Steinbrenner High School.
“We had the highest number of students to earn academic ex- cellence at Steinbrenner High School this grading period. Out of the 95 members of Men of Vision, 20 members reached their aca- demic potential. The officers are leading by example and that is what it is all about,” Anderson said.
Ten of the students who made honor roll attend Steinbrenner High School. They are: Isaiah Abraham, Joseph Yim, Bran- don Johnson, and Sheridan Thompson, who earned the High Honor Roll status. Pierre Alsint, Kierion White, An- dres Bautista, Aaron Webb, Rubein Familia, and Marqua- vis Hamilton made the Honor Roll.
Other members high honor roll designees are: Daniel Diaz, Gaither High School and N’Jhari Jackson, of Pareida School Tampa Bay.
The honor roll designees who
attend Legacy Prep are: Jamar- cus Robertson and Peter McClarin.
Eric Kennedy, Jr., Isaiah Ruiz, and Norris Mertus are students at Van Buren Middle School.
Sligh Middle School honorees are: Emon Anderson, Devin Johnson, and Jeremiah Wick.
Anderson believes that learning takes place outside of the classroom as well as inside. So, when the opportunity presented itself, he took six young men to at- tend the 50th Anniversary of the Voting Right March in Selma, Al- abama.
The young men who went to Selma as part of the NAACP group submitted essays stating what the event was important and what they hoped to learn from the trip. They are: Pierre Alsint, Kierion White, Marquavis Hamilton, Timothy Myers, and Johara Simpson.
