Black History: A Salute To The 44th President Barack Obama
His Birth And Early Years:
Barack Obama is seen with his mother, Ann Dunham.
Barack Hussein Obama, II, was born on August 4, 1961, in Honolulu, Hawaii, the 50th State of the Union. He is the son of the late Ms. Ann Dunham Obama Soetoro, a native of Wichita, Kansas and the late Barack Hussein Obama, Sr., a goat herder, a native of Nyanza Province, Kenya, Africa. His parents were Hussein Onyango
Obama and Akuma Habiba Obama.
His father relocated to Massachusetts to attend Harvard University and pur- sue a Ph.D., separating from his family.
His parents were di- vorced in March 1964, when he was 2 years old.
His Mother
His	mother	married Lolo Soetoro, an Indone- sia student attending the University of Hawaii, in 1965.
The family moved to Jakarta, Indonesia and his sister, Maya Soetoro Ng, was born there in 1970.
His mother became con- cerned after several inci- dents took place and he was sent to his mother’s parents, Stanley and Madelyn Dunham, in Hawaii for his safety and education. He was 10 years old. His mother and sister joined him later.
His mother died on No- vember 7, 1995, at the age of
52, of uterine cancer.
His Father

He only saw his father once after the divorce when the Obama, Sr., visited Hawaii in 1971. In 1981, Obama, Sr., was involved in a car accident that re- sulted in the loss of both legs and his job. He was confined to a wheelchair.
Obama, Sr., returned to Africa, and on November

24, 1982, died in another car accident at the age of 45. His son was 21-years-old.
Education Obama	enrolled	at
Punahou	Academy,	a preparatory academy, where he excelled in basketball. He was one of three Black stu- dents attending the school. And it was there that he be- came aware of racism.
Having	attended	on scholarships since the fifth grade, Obama graduated with academic honors, from the school in 1979.
Following	graduation, Obama enrolled at Occi- dental College, in Los Ange- les, where he attended for two years. After transferring
to Columbia University, in New York City, Obama graduated in 1983, with a degree in Political Science with a specialty in Interna- tional Relations and English Literature.
He worked for two years, and relocated to Chicago, in 1985, where he was em- ployed as a Community Or- ganizer	for	low-income residents of Roseland and the Altgeld Garden Commu- nities.
During this time, he vis- ited Kenya and the graves of father, Obama, Sr., and his grandfather,	Hussein Onyango Obama. He re- turned to the United States and enrolled at Harvard School of Law in 1988.
