Chronology Of 2nd Term In Office
2013
January 16 - President Obama proposes overhaul of nation’s gun laws to end the “epidemic” of gun violence, two months after 26 were killed in the shooting at Newtown, Conn.
January 29 - In an address in Las Vegas, President Obama calls for comprehensive immigration reform, including a path to citizen- ship for 11 million illegal immigrants.
February 12 - President Obama delivers State of the Un-ion, vowing to push economic policies to aid the middle class and with- draw 34,000 troops from Afghanistan.
April 17 - The push for gun control fails after the Senate rejects measures to ban assault-style weapons and expand background checks.
May 23 - In a speech at the National Defense University, Presi- dent Obama lays out new guidelines for drone strikes and pledges to push ahead to shutter the prison at Gitmo.
June 26 - In a major address at Georgetown University, Presi- dent Obama unveils his second-term climate goals, calling for limits on coal plants.
July 19 - President Obama addresses racial profiling and race relations in the U.S. after a jury returns a not guilty verdict in the trial of George Zimmerman. “Trayvon Martin could have been me,” Pres- ident Obama says.
August 31 - President Obama asks Congress to approve military action against Syria, after accusing the regime of using chemical weapons on civilians.
September 10 - President Obama addresses the nation on Syria and asks lawmakers to delay a vote on authorizing force, amid strong Congressional opposition.
October 21 –HealthCare.gov’s Oct. 1 launch is the number one story in the country. President Obama addresses the HealthCare.gov issues in a Rose Garden speech, saying he finds the problems “unac- ceptable,” but insisting the healthcare law is here to stay.
2014
January 14 - President Obama vows a year of action with exec- utive orders to bypass Congress. “I’ve got a pen and I’ve got a phone,” he says.
February 12 - The president signs an executive order raising the minimum wage for federal contract workers, a move opposed by Re- publicans and small business groups.
March 31 - Open enrollment in the first year of ObamaCare ends, with the administration pass-ing their 7 million target.
May 31 - President Obama secures the release of Bowe Bergdahl, a U.S. prisoner of war in Afghanistan, in exchange for five Taliban commanders. But the move, made without in-forming Congress, sparks controversy.
June 2 - The Environmental Protection Agency rolls out climate rules for power plants.
September 30- President Obama approves a plan allowing un- accompanied migrant children to apply for refugee status and pro- vides more money for immigration lawyers.
November 10 - President Obama asks the FCC to implement tough net neutrality rules, including reclassifying broadband as a public utility.
2015
January 9 - President Obama proposes two years of free com- munity college.
January 20 – President Obama delivers State of the Union ad- dress, urging Congress to embrace his policies on "middle class eco- nomics." Obama said the U. S was ready to "turn the page" on the recession.
February 24 - President Obama vetoes the first bill passed by the GOP Congress, a measure authorizing construction of the Key- stone pipeline.
March 4 – President Obama signs a clean Homeland Security bill after a long fight with Republicans who sought to defund his im- migration actions.
April 16 – President Obama signs a $200 Medicare reform bill, hailing it as a bipartisan achievement.
June 2 – President Obama signs a bill renewing the Patriot Act but including long sought for reforms to surveillance programs.
June 25 – The Supreme Court upholds ObamaCare's subsidies in King v. Burwell.
June 26 – The Supreme Court recognizes a right to same-sex marriage nationwide.
June 29 – President Obama unveils plans to expand overtime pay for millions of workers. The same day, Obama finally signs leg- islation granting him fast-track trade authority after a long fight, clearing the way for the Trans Pacific Partnership.
President Obama Makes Final Wave From Marine One Helicopter
During his eight years in of- fice as the 44th President of the United States, President Barack Hussein Obama ac- complished much. He left of- fice with 6 out of 10 Americans approving his performance.
The final ABC polls showed President Obama hit the 60% approval rate. This was his highest approval rating since June of his first year in office, when he was given a 65% rating.
The final rating includes 61% approval of his handling of the economy, 53% approval of his handling of the threat of terrorism, and 52% of his han- dling of healthcare.
Throughout his 8-year tenure, President Obama accomplished many firsts, ranging from becoming the first African American elected to the office, to visiting Cuba, Hiroshima, and federal pris- ons.
