Life Is A University
LAKELAND -- Being born into this world, try- ing to understand who you are, what your purpose is, can be a major focal point as you walk through your journey as a child to adult- hood.
While you are a child going through the many transitions of the educa- tion system, from class to class and grade level to grade level, excelling be- comes your primary con- cern. The color of your skin should not be a con- cern as your attention should be invested on being successful in school and in life.
Being a successful African American male is not the easiest task at all. I was told when I was a youth that I had four strikes against me from the moment I was born. One, you are African American. Two, you are a male. Three, when you are an educated African Amer- ican male, you have a mind of your own, which
equals into knowledge and power. Four, you have to work twice as hard than any other culture to earn a good honest living.
With all of this being said, there are systems in place to cripple the African American male: unequal education, unequal justice systems, job opportunities and affordable housing. In this world we live, there are many road blocks for the African American male that are inherent to things one cannot humanly change. My ethnicity being the main one.
With all the education, awards earned and acco- lades received. There is still a space in society where I am first judged by the color of my skin before the content of my charac- ter. What will it take for an African American male to really be successful in the United States of America is the realistic question that still goes unanswered.
