Potter Elementary Benefits From Referendum Dollars
BY IRIS B. HOLTON Sentinel City Editor
Last week, a new play- ground was created at Pot- ter Elementary School. The funding was taken from the half-cent Education Refer- endum, making the school the first in the district to benefit Education Referen- dum.
The work on the play-
ground began last Friday with the installation of the new play equipment - re- placing the old playground that has been on campus for 20 years.
Potter Elementary School is located in East Tampa, at 3224 E. Cayuga St. Last week, the District received the first check from the half-penny sales tax, totaling $9 million dol-
lars from January sales tax collections. Since receiving the funding, the District is now ready to deliver on our half-penny promise to tax- payers. Smaller projects in- cluding playgrounds, athletic courts and tracks and painting projects will begin.
Some of the smaller projects the Districts plans to accomplish this year in-
clude: replace 50 play- grounds, tracks and athletic courts; complete 31 re- painting and re-carpeting projects and invest more than $1 million in school se- curity improvements.
Larger projects includ- ing air conditioner replace- ments and roof replacements will begin this summer when students and staff are off campus.
Other larger projects this District hopes to complete this year are to: replace or overhaul 21 school air con- ditioners; and replace aging
roofs on 13 schools
The money will benefit
students in every area of Hillsborough County, at all of our 235 schools. The projects across the district will be spread over the next ten years as the district re- ceives the money. The Dis- trict teams created a plan of 1,785 total projects, focus- ing on high priority needs.
Last November, voters approved the half-cent Ed- ucation Referendum to ben- efit Hillsborough County schools. The tax was ap- proved for a 10-year period.
