An 18-year-old Tampa man has been charged with first-degree murder in the death of a high school stu- dent. The body of the 18-year- old was discovered on a New Tampa Street on September 6, 2015.
The investigation revealed that Eion Gustitis was shot and killed because he was ac- cused of stealing a cell phone while attending a party. Wit- nesses told police the phone was in fact found at the apart- ment after the murder.
According to the Tampa Police Department, police re- sponded to 9711 Commerce Street after a pedestrian dis- covered a man’s body lying in the road. At the time of the discovery, the teenager didn’t have any identification on his body.
As the news circulated throughout the community, Gustitis’ family was search- ing for him because he had not been seen since the day before. They contacted police and the body was positively identified as Gustitis, who was a senior at Freedom High School at the time of his death.
During the investigation, police learned that Gustitis had attended a party at a friend’s apartment. One of the people at the party reportedly became upset because he be- lieved Gustitis had stolen his cell phone.
David Alexander Brunson and others report- edly left the apartment to “take care of it.” Brunson is alleged to have called Gusti- tis on the pretense of selling him a gun.
Once he met the teenager, they drove to Commerce Street, where Brunson and Gustitis left the car. Wit- nesses told police the two teenagers left the vehicle and they heard a “pop.” Brunson returned alone and reportedly said, “It’s done.”
Brunson was arrested on December 26, 2015, and charged with several offenses, including aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer with a deadly weapon and car- rying a concealed weapon.
On January 15, 2016, the charge of being a felon in pos- session of a firearm was added to the charges.
On Monday, Brunson was officially charged with premeditated first-degree murder and armed robbery. He is currently being held at the Hillsborough County Jail on a bond of $413,750.
