The James Family, de- scendants of Andrew and Elmira Harris James, re- cently enjoyed a 5-day reunion in Tallahassee, FL.
Andrew James, the son of his slave master, was born in Gerard, Alabama. Following Emancipation, his mother, Winnie James, remained on her master’s plantation. When he was 15 years old, she passed away. Although free, Andrew was not allowed to attend the funeral. He ran away, ending up in Fort Valley, Georgia. Here he met Elmira Harris. They married and had 6 chil- dren: Bill, Pearlie James Walker, Lawrence, Gertrude James Bell, An- drew, Jr. and Walza James Williams. Andrew also had a son whose name was Tal- madge.
The delightful, well- planned reunion began with a “Meet and Greet’ reception, and ended with a breakfast on the 5th morning.
The agenda included an ex- citing all day tour of historical sites throughout Leon County, a picnic at Camp Richardson
(named for great-grandson
Bishop A. J. Richardson and wife, Connie Speights Richardson), a shopping trip to Bradley’s Country Store, and fun and games in the hotel lobby each night.
On Sunday, they wor- shipped at Bethel A. M. E. Church (The renowned Talla- hassee Boys Choir provided the music; an outstanding ‘treat’ for all.)
It was here that the family learned that Corey James, a great-great grandson, of Del Rio, Texas, had been drafted by the Oakland Raiders. Corey was a standout (and graduate) of Colorado State University, Class of December 2015.
Corey’s grandfather, Clarence James, Sr. resided here in the Bay Area (Odessa/Keystone).
This fabulous reunion was hosted by Denise James, as- sisted by Herb and Angela Richardson.
Relatives came from Chicago, Illinois, Columbia, S. C., Atlanta, GA, Del Rio, TX, and the Tampa Bay Area.
Reunion 2018 will be in Tampa, hosted by Pearl Joyner James and family.
