First Shuffleboard Tournament Of New Year Held

On Friday, January 26th, members of the Portable Shuffleboard Team held their first tournament of the New Year. The tournament was held at Ragan Park, 1200 E. Lake Avenue.
When the final score was tallied, the winners of the tournament were first place winners Ms. Quincy Jef- ferson and Ms. Estelle Acree. The second place trophies were captured by Ms. Connie Bowen and Ms. Linda Cotney.
Each winner received a gift card as the prize. This month the gift cards were sponsored by Ms. Love Timmons, of Simply Healthcare.
Steve Scott serves as the Director and Trainer of the organization. Ms. Katherine Palmer is the Assistant Trainer.
The shuffleboard team members are participants who represent the Spring Hill Community Center, the Fair Oaks Community Cen- ter, and the Ragan Park Community Center.
The teams currently use temporary or portable shuf-
fleboard to play during the month. However, Scott has been campaigning to obtain a permanent shuffleboard court in the East Tampa community.
Anyone interested in
learning to play shuffle- board can come to Ragan Park Community Center, 1200 E. Lake Avenue. Scott teaches the game to senior citizens on Mondays and Fridays from 11 a.m. until 1
p.m. He also teaches the game at Cyrus Greene Com- munity Center on Thursday, from 1 p.m. until 2:30 p.m.
Scott said he uses portable shuffleboards to train seniors at Williams
Park and Fair Oaks Commu- nity Centers.

‘A Day Of Service’ In Progress Village
On Saturday, January 20, 2018, the Progress Village Civic Council, Inc., Hillsbor- ough County Community Col- lege (MLK Day of Service Grant), Hillsborough County Commissioners and Office of Neighborhood Relations (Community Clean-up Grant), Parks and Recreation Depart- ment sponsored the “Progress Village Disaster Preparedness and Clean-Up Day.”
This was a dual purpose MLK Day of Service activity that allowed participants to spruce up Progress Village and give back to the commu- nity, at the same time provid- ing Disaster Preparedness kits. Volunteers from Spoto High School, Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Department, First Baptist Church of Progress Village, Red Hatters and residents of Progress Vil- lage collected over six metric tons of refuse. Volunteers also picked up garbage along Progress Blvd. and other com- mon areas.
In addition to the clean-up volunteers also went door-to- door dropping off Disaster
Starter kits were left at the homes of 850 residents.
Semi-Tractor trailers loaded the tons of debris and garbage col- lected during Clean-Up Day in Progress Village.
Preparedness Starter Kits to over 850 homes in the com- munity. At the end of the day, 45 exhausted volunteers con- gratulated one another for a
job well done!
Because of the volunteers
and residents of Progress Vil- lage, this was successful event!
