Local Activists Urge Residents To Vote Early
BY IRIS B. HOLTON Sentinel City Editor
Two local activists are en- couraging members of the com- munity to vote early. Early Voting began on Monday, and voters can cast ballots at 19 lo- cations.
Ms. Ann Jenkins said, “Although we have a Republi- can President, local and state elections are very important because they determine what happens in our community.
“The Primary Election is less than two weeks away. We need to be about the business of getting to the polls. We know that the victories of Republi- cans and other right-winged candidates are due to low turnout.
“Residents can use social media to spread the word about getting out and voting. Use Facebook and Twitter, and tell your friends that we need them more than ever to go to the polls and vote.”
Businessman Marvin Knight said, “We see what is taking place on the national level. But we need to concen- trate on every office from the Governor on down. It is very important that we get out and go to the polls.

“We need to educate our- selves and our families about the candidates. Residents must vote for the candidate that will do the best for us and our com- munity.
“Tampa is changing and the only way to have a voice is to vote. We don’t want a low turnout to determine our fu- ture.
“We have got to take the time to go to the polls. I am en- couraging everyone to take ad- vantage of Early Voting. Please go to the polls and don’t wait until the last minute.”
Knight further said that it is critical that those who can, cast ballots. He said for those who have not registered can still register in time to vote dur- ing the General Election in No-

vember.
Traditional Low Turnout Ms. Jenkins said, “If we are to keep the local and state seats democratic, then low African American voter turnout must improve. The trend of low voter turnout during a non- presidential election year is alarming, regardless of party lines, it indicates that many of our neighbors have become disillusioned with the political
process.”
She stated that another pos-
itive side to early voting is you will know if there is a problem. “Before you go to vote, check the Hillsborough County Su- pervisor of Elections website to make sure your name is still on the list. If it is not, then you have time to get it corrected.”
