Commission Chair Urges Resident Not To Shoot On Holiday
BY IRIS B. HOLTON Sentinel City Editor
It has always been a tradi- tion to “shoot out the old year and shoot in the New Year.” However, each year, people are injured by this celebratory gunfire.
This year, Les Miller, Jr., Chairman of the Hillsbor- ough County Board of Com- missioners, is urging residents to celebrate “without celebra- tory gunfire.”
“We have a lot to celebrate during the holidays because we live in such a wonderful community. We do not need to ruin somebody else’s holi- day with reckless behavior like celebratory gunfire,” Com- missioner Miller said.
In addition to it being a dangerous practice, shooting a gun into the air is illegal.
The injuries take place

once the projectiles fall back to the ground. And, if it strikes a person, more than three quar- ters of celebratory gunfire in- juries are to the head, shoulders, and feet, the U. S. Centers for Disease Control
said.
In addition to striking peo-
ple, bullets can also cause property damage. In the past, the Sentinel has written about people injured by cele- bratory gunfire.
At the beginning of this year, the Sentinel covered two incidents where bullets struck one person’s vehicle and in another article, bullets penetrated the roof of some- one’s home and landed down in the bedroom.
Commissioner Miller
further said, “The effects of celebratory gunfire can be far- reaching. Beyond the physical harm that can be caused, there is an economic development cost, as well as a tourism im- pact. A guest at Busch Gar- dens was struck by a bullet that had been shot in the air miles away from the park last year.”
