Mom Prays For Cheerleader’s Recovery, Restoration
BY IRIS B. HOLTON Sentinel City Editor
The last thing any parent wants to hear is that his or her child has been seriously injured in an accident. The worst thing that parent wants to hear is that the prognosis for survival is not good.
“The doctor came out and told us to come and say our goodbyes because she is going to die,” Mrs. Jencey Brinson said. She received the news when she and Freddie Brin- son, Jr., her husband, arrived at Shands Children’s Hospital in Gainesville. Her 11-year-old
SHATAYSHIA BRINSON
daughter, ShaTayshia Brin- son, had been seriously injured in a traffic accident.
But, Mrs. Brinson, being a woman of faith has turned to an- other doctor. “We are asking for prayers. We are petitioning that she will wake up, and we are praying to the Lord for her to wake up. Our prayers are full restoration.”
It has been more than 3 weeks after the tragedy and ShaTayshia remains on a ven- tilator in a coma in the Intensive Care Unit at the hospital.
Mrs. Brinson said the ac- cident happened on January 20th. Some family members had gone to Gainesville to watch the men’s basketball game between the University of Florida Gators and the LSU Tigers. Jordan Mickey of LSU, is their cousin.
After the game, the family began their return trip home. Ms. LaWanda Miller was the driver. Mrs. Jackie Hunter, her son, Reggie Hunter, ShaTayshia, and her brother, Freddie Brinson, III, were the passengers.
She said Freddie was the only person “who walked away without a scratch.” The others were all injured. But, ShaTayshia was ejected from the vehicle and received the most serious injuries.
Mrs. Brinson was told the tread on the tires separated, causing the vehicle to go into ro- tation and flip several times. It came to rest blocking traffic in the northbound direction after bouncing across the guardrail.
Mrs. Brinson, who has kept a vigil at the hospital since the accident said when she heard the doctor’s words, her immediate prayer was, “Lord, please don’t take another child from me.”
The mother of six was refer- ring to a traffic accident that took place on July 20, 2006. Her oldest son, 18-year-old Marvin Wiggins, II, was killed. Mrs. Brinson said Wiggins was ejected from the vehicle and landed in the sand. He suffo- cated before help arrived.
About ShaTayshia
Born on July 1, 2003, ShaTayshia is a student at Fer- rell Middle Magnet Girls Acad- emy. She is also a cheerleader for the Fair Oaks Rattlers and wants to become a model. Her mother said she loves to dance, and loves attending church at Friendly M. B. Church.
Mrs. Brinson said her daughter, known as “Dudda Bug,” blossomed over the sum- mer and seems to have just grown up. “She was so excited about going to the game.”
The family lives in the Grant Park subdivision and Des- mond Key, Grant Park Resi- dent Association President said, “The Grant Park Community, in support of the Brinson family, is asking East Tampa and the Tampa Bay community to stand in solidarity with the Brinson family.”
