Late Foul Call That Will Overshadow The Virginia-Auburn Final Four Game
Virginia's Ty Jerome (11) picks up a loose ball late in a win against Auburn and Bryce Brown (2).
A great Final Four game deserved a better ending.
For three, maybe four sec- onds, Auburn thought it would be playing in the na- tional title game for the first time in school history.
The Tigers, who launched an explosive run in the final minutes to take the lead over Virginia in the Final Four, embraced one another and screamed in unison after Kyle Guy's go-ahead 3- point attempt over Samir Doughty's right-in-his- chest pressure clanked off the rim, and the final buzzer sounded.
But the cheers of Auburn fans quieted and became stir- ring boos. As the officials gathered and walked toward the monitors afterward, Vir- ginia began to half-celebrate, while Auburn simmered. And that's where this whole story gets crazy, as a missed double dribble with 1.5 seconds left and a foul call with 0.6 sec- onds left punctuated a stun- ning game.
James Breeding, one of the three officials in Saturday night's Final Four matchup, called the foul on Doughty, who appeared to make con- tact with Guy on the 3-point attempt. Guy made all three free throws, and a despera- tion shot by Auburn's Bryce Brown in the final second fell short.
Virginia 63, Auburn 62.
Baylor Holds Off Notre Dame, Wins 3rd Title
The transition from 4-3 to a 3-4 alignment should be seamless under defensive coordinator Todd Bowles, who likes to blitz.
Jameis Winston, Mike Evans and O. J. Howard apparently could- n’t wait, getting in extra work at Texas A&M’s facili- ties.
No matter where you stand on Gerald McCoy, it’s safe to say the Bucca-
neers have botched the pub- lic handling of the six-time Pro Bowler, and the private handling, too.
In a critical year for the franchise, and a critical year for quarterback Jameis Winston, new Bucs head coach Bruce Arians is tak- ing a bit of a gamble by turn- ing the offensive coordinator and play calling duties to a mostly inexperienced Byron Leftwhich.
A season ago, there was tragedy. This year, a star went down, but the season ends with a championship.
Baylor, the top overall seed of the women's NCAA basketball tournament, has won its third national title, defeating No. 1 seed Notre Dame 82-81 at Amalie Arena in Tampa, Florida on Sunday. It's Baylor's first title since 2012, which also came against the Fighting Irish.
Baylor (37-1) led by as many as 17, but after a leg in- jury to Bears star forward Lauren Cox in the third quar- ter, the Irish (35-4) surged back to take the lead with just
over three minutes left.
But Baylor regrouped, as Chloe Jackson, who led Baylor with 26 points in her final collegiate game, hit what turned out to be the dagger
with 4 seconds to go.
Arike Ogunbowale, the
star in last year's title game, was fouled with the Irish trailing by two with 1.9 sec- onds remaining. But unlike her clutch shot to win the championship last year, there were no heroics this time. The senior missed her first free throw, and then she made the second despite intentionally trying to miss. She finished with 31 points.

Little Progress’ In Talks
Antonio Brown is now an Oakland Raider, so one would think he has moved on from talking about the Steelers or anyone on the team. Well, he’s back to talk- ing about another Steelers player not named Ben Roethlisberger: JuJu Smith-Schuster. Both players took shots at each other Sunday.
Wait, what happened?
OK, so a Steelers fan on Twitter replied to one of Brown’s tweets with a photo that says Smith- Schuster is the Steelers’ 2018 MVP. Unexpectedly, Brown went in on his for- mer teammate:
‘Emotion: boy fumbled the whole post season in the biggest game of year ! Every- one went blind to busy mak- ing guys famous not enough reality these days !’
Smith-Schuster
coughed up the ball against the New Orleans Saints in the fourth quarter in Week 16 — which led to a Saints victory and ultimately the Steelers being eliminated from the playoffs.
Of course, Smith- Schuster didn’t take too
JUJU SMITH-SCHUSTER AND ANTONIO BROWN
kindly of Brown’s remarks, so he clapped back with tweets of his own:
Last season, Smith- Schuster led the Steelers in receptions (111) and receiv- ing yards (1,426). Even though Brown corralled a league-high 15 touchdown receptions last season, it looked like Smith-Schus- ter was morphing into the Steelers’ go-to receiver.
It seems like Brown has beef with anyone associated with the Steelers. We all know he doesn’t have nice things to say about head coach Mike Tomlin or Roethlisberger. But Smith-Schuster, though? Barely anyone saw this com- ing, including Smith- Schuster himself.
Quarterback Russell Wilson is still waiting on a new contract from the Seattle Seahawks, and the process appears to be moving slowly.
According to Bob Con- dotta of the Seattle Times, the two sides have been en- gaged in frequent discussions about Wilson’s new deal, but there has not been any breakthrough in negotia- tions. One source told Con- dotta on Friday that there has been “very little progress” in these talks.
Wilson has set an April 15 deadline for a new deal, and that deadline could mo- tivate both sides to make a deal quickly.
RUSSELL WILSON Wilson has one year re-
maining on the four-year deal he signed prior to the 2015 season. The good news for Seattle is that there doesn’t appear to be any threat of the quarterback holding out if no deal is reached by the 15th.
