Greater Bethel’s MLK Day Of Service Is ‘A Day On, Helping Others’
As we prepare to honor and celebrate the Dr. Mar- tin Luther King, Jr., holi- day, Greater Bethel M. B. Church, Inc., is grateful to re- ceive a fifth year MLK Day of Service grant under the aus- pices of Hillsborough Com- munity College. Greater Bethel is elated to use its awarded funds to focus on “Education” that will make a positive impact in the Tampa Bay Community.
One of Dr. King’s quotes is, “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?’” Greater Bethel plans to an- swer that question by hosting two MLK Day Of Service projects.
The first service project is the Teen Leadership Summit scheduled for Saturday, Jan- uary 11, 2020, at 9 A. M. for middle and high school stu- dents. The purpose of the teen summit is to have elected and appointed offi- cials introduce themselves to the youth through their pro- fessional roles, responsibili- ties and services of their
agencies. Many youth have never met or know who the elected and appointed offi- cials are in the community. The goal is to let parents, chaperones and the commu- nity know that their agencies are here to help in preventa- tive ways and serve as com- munity partners.
Those who will be in at- tendance will be: Brian Dugan, Chief of Police, City of Tampa; Julianne Holt, Public Defender, Hillsbor- ough County; Chad Chro- nister, Sheriff, Hillsborough County; An- drew Warren, State Attor- ney, Hillsborough County; Orlando Gudes, District 5, City of Tampa City Council; and Jeff Eakins, Superin- tendent, Hillsborough County School District, will come and make an impactful educational learning experi- ence on being a good teen leader.
The Teen Summit guest speaker is Freddie Barton, Executive Director of Safe and Sound Hillsborough, along with workshop presen-
ters Javed Mogan, Wealth Wave – Giving Back: Serving Your Community; Ra’Shetta Coonce, CEO Founder, Countless Finan- cial Solution, Inc. – Financial Literacy, Ida Booth, Hills- borough County Supervisor of Elections - Voter’s Educa- tion, and Travis Coy, Hills- borough County State Attorney - Juvenile Civil Ci- tation. This Educational En- hancement Experience summit will provide addi- tional guidance to future leaders of Tampa Bay.
The second service project is the Homeless/Veterans/ Community Day scheduled for Saturday, January 18, 2020, at 9 A. M. The guest
speaker is The Honorable Jane Castor, Mayor, City of Tampa. During this program homeless persons, homeless veterans and other low to moderate income persons will receive an array of social services...just to name a few: a shower, haircut, state ID cards, food stamps and Med- icaid assistance, health in- surance, voter’s registration, flu shot and health screen- ings. The Church has part- nered with the CDC of Tampa, Domain Homes, City of Tampa’s Housing and Hillsborough County’s Hous- ing to provide first time homebuyers qualification in- formation to low and moder- ate income persons who
want to own their homes. “Greater Bethel is ex- tremely pleased to use its awarded funds to focus on “Education” that will make a positive impact in the Tampa Bay Community,” said Pas-
tor Brett Snowden.
“We want as many persons to come to Greater Bethel and receive an array of social services, particularly prospective first time home- buyers who are looking to become home owners, and the public is invited to both events,” said Gwen Myers, Coordinator of MLK Day of
Service.
Greater Bethel is located
at 1207 North Jefferson Street, downtown, Tampa.
