With so much chaos going on in West Tampa, Christ of Calvary Community Church has been a beacon of hope, prayer, and worship for every- one in the area.
A critical piece of their suc- cess has been the tireless work of Pastors Phillip Tucker, Jr., and Phileatha Tucker- Johnson, who have created a Praise Team and Youth Min- istry that rivals any in the area.
A part of that Praise Team and Youth Ministry’s success has been a 19-year-old songstress, Jerminique Jada Cannon.
Cannon is the leader of the youth movement, and it all began when at the age of 2, she discovered she could sing.
“When I was 2, my aunt was playing a song by Kirk Franklin, ‘Lean On Me,’ and I just started singing. That’s how it all started.
“After that, I started singing at different events and I actu- ally sang in the adult choir for a while, because my voice was so strong.”
As a student at Sligh Middle School, Cannon was singing a Whitney Houston song-

when she was overheard by the faculty and staff at the school, one of them Pastor Johnson.
“I always have an attitude when I sing, and for me, that’s a good thing.
“My mom, Norma Pierce, was instrumental in helping me train my voice, along with Pastor Johnson and Julia Flowers.”
Cannon said when she re- alized she could really sing, she wanted to do so much, but she first and foremost, wanted to make her mom and Pastor Johnson proud.
Cannon is currently at- tending Hillsborough Com- munity College’s Ybor Campus studying business ed- ucation.
“At this point in my life, I need to start setting priorities, and when it comes to secular music, I can sing that as well. I prefer Gospel.
“What I’d like to do in the future is become more Christ- like in my life, and achieve the kind of success that will help me take care of my family.”
Cannon said she has no problem singing in front of a group of people, and she takes pride in being the Praise Dance Leader at her church.
“Aside from singing, I play the violin, I’m into acting, I dance, and just enjoy the blessings God has given me.
“I love my family and church family.”
Cannon has 21 siblings.
