3 Municipalities Approve Funding For Pilot Ferry Program
BY IRIS B. HOLTON Sentinel City Editor
Last week, three of four municipalities approved the idea of a ferry joining the cities of Tampa and St. Petersburg, and allotted funding for the project. The fourth agency will decide during its meeting on Tuesday. Each agency will contribute $350,000 to the project.
Hillsborough County Com- missioners approved it unani- mously last Wednesday. On Thursday, the Tampa City Council members voted 6-1 in favor of the idea. The idea was also approved by the St. Pe- tersburg City Council Thurs- day with one Council member voting against it and another being absent.
If approved by the Pinellas County Commission next Tuesday, the pilot program will begin in November.
The funding will not be spent unless all four munici- palities agree to contribute $350,000 each. The total cost of the project is $1.4 million.
The idea to link downtown St. Petersburg and downtown
Tampa with the use of a ferry was presented in January of this year.
All four agencies were pre- sented a proposal to operate the ferry on a 6-month trial basis.
St. Petersburg Mayor Rick Kriseman met with all four agencies and provided a Powerpoint presentation.
Having taken the lead in the project, St. Petersburg will spend an additional $50,000 to improve its dock and termi- nal. St. Petersburg will use the funding obtained from the BP settlement for its portion of the project.
The plan also calls for the company, HMS Ferries, to re- ceive the first $125,000 of the revenue derived from the ven- ture.
The ferry will have two round-trip crossings each day and 3 on Fridays. It is esti- mated that the ticket price would be around $10.
Even if Pinellas County Commissioners approve the project on Tuesday, it will still require the approval of the U. S. Corps of Engineers by Sep- tember 15th.
