D.E.L.T.A., Inc. To Implement Dr. MLK Day Of Service African American Read-In At Local School
On Tuesday, January 21, 2020, in celebration of Dr. MLK Day of Service, Delta Enriches Life through Training & Awareness (D.E.L.T.A.), Incorporated, will host an African Ameri- can Read-In, “Read-to- Learn,” in collaboration with Legacy Preparatory Academy.
The purpose of the African American Read-In is to provide the opportu- nity for the students to see themselves in books and vi- sualize the reality of their
dreams.
The African American
Read-In will immerse more than 150 Kindergarten through 8th Grade students and their teachers at Legacy Prep in a literature-rich en- vironment featuring two celebrity readers, an African American story- teller, and an independent reading activity.
Celebrity readers will read aloud stories written by African American au- thors that feature African American characters; an
African American folklore storyteller will engage the students in the African ex- perience through interac- tive storytelling and vivid entertainment.
Students in grades 6-8 will read the book, M.L.K.: Journey of A King by Tonya Bolden, and pro- vide written reflections of the book that will be posted throughout the school for students and teachers to “Read-to-Learn.”
The project received its primary funding from a Dr.
MLK Day of Service grant to D.E.L.T.A., Inc., through a competitive grant oppor- tunity offered to nonprofit organizations by Hillsbor- ough Community College.
“Read-to-Learn” is a community event and will be open to the public. It will take place Tuesday, Janu- ary 21, 2020, from 9 AM – 11 AM at Legacy Prepara- tory Academy, 302 E. Linebaugh Avenue, Tampa, FL 33612.
Visitor sign-in begins at 8:30 AM. Community
members who attend the event must adhere to the school’s visitor protocol. Dr. Y. Capers is Principal of Legacy Preparatory Academy, a local, public charter school serving chil- dren in grades K-8.
