Black Woman Dies After Waiting Hours In ER for Help
It is often suggested that women, especially black women, go ignored and/or un- seen due to implicit bias in the American healthcare system. Such may have been the case for Tashonna Ward, a 25- year-old daycare teacher from Milwaukee who died Jan. 2 while trying to find a doctor to help her, USA Today reports.
Ward waited for over two hours in the emergency room of Froedtert Hospital before leaving to find faster help. She collapsed and died shortly after and now her family is looking for answers as to why she was- n’t seen sooner after she re- ported severe chest pains and trouble breathing.
“How can you triage some- one with shortness of breath and chest pain and stick them

in the lobby?” said Ward’s cousin, Andrea Ward. “Froedtert needs to change their policy.”
Hospital staff had checked her heartbeat with an electro- cardiogram, which appeared normal, according to the re-
port. After, she was asked to stay in the waiting room until she could be admitted and seen by a doctor, according to her- family.
At 5:45 p.m., Ward posted on Facebook, “I really hope I’m not in this emergency room all night.”
At 7:35 p.m., she posted that she’d been told she might have to wait two to six hours to see a doctor. “Idk what they can do about the emergency system at freodert (sic) but they damn sure need to do something. I been here since 4:30 something for shortness of breath, and chest pains for them to just say it’s a two to SIX hour wait to see a dr.”
A chest X-ray revealed that Ward suffered from car- diomegaly: an enlarged heart.
Teen Whose GoFundMe Raised $300K Arrested For Murder
CHAUNCEY AND TIMOTHY BLACK
Four years ago, 15-year-old Chauncy Black was a viral sensation whose offer to help a stranger led to an outpouring of donations. Now that same teen has been arrested for sec- ond-degree murder in a week- end shooting.
In 2016, Black was in a Kroger parking lot in Memphis when he decided to approach a man to offer to carry his gro- ceries, reported Fox13 Mem- phis. The man agreed, and when Black asked only for some donuts for dinner, he of- fered to drive him home. When he got there he saw Black and his mother living in squalid conditions. Impressed by the teen’s straight A average and his willingness to help his fam- ily, the man, musician Matt White, posted to Facebook which led to an outpouring of support and ultimately a Go- FundMe page that raised over 300K for Black and his family.
The Black family was able to buy a house with the money but according to Fox 13, Chauncy showed some signs of continuing problems. He was charged with reckless felony endangerment last year
and put on probation.
In this latest incident,
Chauncy and his brother, Timothy were at home when someone shot at their house. They returned fire and when they did, they hit Kaleb Wakefield, 26. He was taken to the hospital where he later died.
Both Black brothers have been charged. Jaylin Ed- wards, 20, who was at the scene with Tyrek Edwards, 18, was identified as the man who shot at the house while Tyrek displayed a handgun; were charged with aggravated assault, reckless endangerment with a deadly weapon and pos- session of a firearm, according to Fox 13 Memphis.
According to Localmem- phis.com, police have re- sponded to the Black brothers house 53 times since 2017.
White, who now runs a cancer recovery business, has continued to supervise fundraisers for those in need. No longer as close to the Black family, according to several re- ports, he has not posted a re- sponse to the news about Chauncy.
He’s Out: Cory Booker Ends Presidential Bid
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Democrat Cory Booker dropped out of the presidential race Monday, ending a cam- paign whose message of unity and love failed to resonate in a political era marked by chaos and anxiety.
His departure now leaves a field that was once the most di- verse in history with just one remaining African American candidate, former Massachu- setts Gov. Deval Patrick.
Since launching his cam- paign last February, Booker, a U. S. senator from New Jersey, struggled to raise the type of money required to support a White House bid. He was at the

back of the pack in most sur- veys and failed to meet the polling requirements needed to participate in Tuesday’s de- bate. Booker also missed last month’s debate and exits the race polling in low single digits in the early primary states and nationwide.
