Polk County’s Alumni Chapter Annual FAMU Scholarship Gala

Florida A&M University Polk County Alumni Chapter President, Ms. Doris Hicks presented the $100,000 endowment, on the behalf of the students of Polk County.

Florida A&M University - Polk County Alumni Chap- ter Annual Scholarship Gala was held on Saturday, Febru- ary 18th. The theme for this year’s gala was “Celebrat- ing the Moment: Believ- ing in the Power of Yes We Can.”
The gala was hosted by the Alumni Association of Polk County and the Execu- tive Board Members of the Florida A&M University - Polk County Alumni Chap-
ter, which were the follow- ing: Doris Hicks, James Hill, Jr., George Watson, Donald Williams, Sr., Dr. Shandale Terrell, Annette Dunn and Betty Woodard.
Florida A&M University President and the Gala Keynote Speaker, Dr. Larry Robinson stated, students achieving higher education degrees are vital components to the economy and work- force for the future in the
State of Florida and the United States of America.
Dr. Robinson also spoke on and emphasized family’s critical role in a stu- dent’s education.
Dr. Robinson encour- aged and informed the citi- zens and parents at the gala, "it's imperative when stu- dents are in high school, they need to be college ready to achieve higher education success."
“It is vital,” Dr. Robin- son stated, “that we carry the torch for the students to make sure they’re successful and believing in them- selves.”
Dr. Robinson was pre- sented a key to the City by Howard Wiggs, Mayor for the City of Lakeland, for his encouraging words and for Florida A&M University’s great contributions to Lake- land and Polk County to ed-
ucation.
The highlight of this
year’s event was the presen- tation of the $100,000 en- dowment on the behalf of students of Polk County, by Jacquelynne Maxey. Howard Wiggs also pre- sented a proclamation to Ms. Doris Hicks, the Pres- ident of the Florida A&M University - Polk County Alumni Chapter, capping off a very successful event.
Black History Month Festival
On Saturday February 18th, the City of Lakeland held the Annual Black History Month Festival at the Coleman Bush Center. More than 500 citizens attended the Historical Pro- gram.
Some of the citizens that came out to support this great event were from left: John Williams (PAL), Program Coordi- nator; Michele Bouie (PAL), Mentoring Coordinator; Howard Wiggs, Mayor for the City of Lakeland and Dr. Shandale Ter- rell.
