    Tampa Alphas Hosting Medical Education Program For Youth During MLK Day Of Service
 Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity – Tampa Alumni Chapter and the GZL Educational Founda- tion, Inc., will be hosting the program, “Empowering Our Communities Through Better Health – An Educational Sympo- sium on Career Opportu- nities in Medicine.” This event will be held on Sunday, January 27, 2019 from 3 p. m. to 6 p. m. at Hillsborough Community College – Ybor Campus, Palm Avenue @ Re- publica De Cuba (14th St.) in the Ybor Room.
The goal of the symposium is to expose underrepresented male and female, middle, high school, and college-aged youth to medical professionals and careers in medicine.
Students will interact with physicians, dentists, and phar- macists that look like they do, and will find out what they need to do to prepare for ca- reers in these fields during high school and college. Tampa Bay area medical pro- fessionals, including members of the Tampa Bay Meharry Alumni Association, have vol- unteered to participate in the program and to speak to par-

Tampa Bay area colleges and universities, hospitals, medical organizations, and health insurance companies are invited to participate in the Educational Symposium as well. The MLK Day of Service focus area for this project is Education. The goal is to in- crease the numbers of minor- ity students, especially Black males pursuing careers in health care professions. The program is funded through an
MLK Day of Service Grant from Hillsborough Commu- nity College.
Meharry Medical College is also a partner in this event. Meharry, which is a Histori- cally Black College and Uni- versity (HBCU), recently launched its national “Black Male Initiative” to increase the numbers of Black male doc- tors. The ultimate future out- comes are to increase the
numbers of Black health care professionals and to corre- spondingly improve the health of Black and minority commu- nities.
According to NBC News, “Black patients are more likely to feel comfortable with Black doctors and more likely to ad- here to certain preventive measures delivered by Black doctors, research shows. And Black doctors are more likely
      Winners Chosen For Final Shuffleboard Tournament Of Year

Last Friday, residents par- ticipating in the local Shuffle- board Club held their monthly competition. This was the final competition for this year.
The event was held the Shuffleboard Tournament at Ragan Park Community Cen- ter, the Jazzy Seniors played among themselves because of the Christmas Holidays the other seniors from the other Centers were not able to at- tend. The Jazzy Seniors really enjoyed playing Shuffleboard this year.
The first place winner prizes went to Ms. Connie Bowen and Ms. Linda Cot- ney. Ms. Quency Jefferson and Ms. Katherine Palmer captured the second place win- ner prizes.
The sponsors for this month’s event were Dr. Von- dalyn Crawford, of Health Matters Pharmacy, and Micah Miller, of Integrity Insurance.

ing to play shuffleboard can visit Ragan Park Community Center, 1200 E. Lake Avenue. Scott teaches Shuffleboard on Mondays and Fridays from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. He also teaches the game at Cyrus Greene Community Center on Thursday, from 1 p.m. until 2:30 p.m.
Scott said he uses portable shuffleboards to train seniors at Williams Park and Fair Oaks Community Centers.
