Hillsborough Education Foundation Accepting Scholarship Applications
For many local public- school students, the idea of making the college dream a reality can seem out of reach. Many are learning English as a second lan- guage, come from single- parent households or plan to be first-generation college students.
For nearly 30 years, the Hillsborough Education Foundation has served as a resource for these students and their teachers, with a focus on helping at-risk stu- dents make it to graduation.
One way the foundation offers its support is through college scholarships and mentoring – last year, 312 scholarships totaling $1.4 million were awarded to Hillsborough County Public School students.
This year’s scholarship window is currently open, with online applications being accepted until Jan. 10.
Two types of scholar- ships are offered:
Take Stock in Chil- dren Scholarships: Stu- dents in grades 7-9 who have a GPA of at least 2.5 and qualify for free or re- duced-price lunch may be eligible to receive Florida Prepaid scholarships through HEF’s Take Stock in Children program.
Senior Community Scholarships: High- school seniors may apply for a variety of scholarships with just one application. These scholarships start at $1,000.

STATE REPRESENTATIVE SEAN SHAW ...Serves On
Hillsborough Education Foundation Board
“The mission of the Hills- borough Education Founda- tion is to ensure that all students have the tools and support that they need to reach their full academic po- tential,” Foundation Presi- dent Kim Jowell said.
HEF is a nonprofit or- ganization that is funded by community donations and governed by a Board of Di- rectors made up of local pro- fessionals and community members.
Board members include Hillsborough County School Board Vice Chair, Tamara Shamburger, former School Board member, Doretha Edgecomb and State Rep. Sean Shaw, D- Tampa.
“The reason I’m involved and serve as a board mem- ber of the Hillsborough Ed- ucation Foundation is because they truly believe in the mantra that no child de- serves to be left behind,” Rep. Shaw said. “A quality education is something that every student should have, and HEF is committed every day to providing the re- sources necessary to support the school district’s efforts in delivering on that right.”
