40th Street Site Of Fatal Accident To Be Upgraded
BY IRIS B. HOLTON Sentinel City Editor
Earlier this month, City
Councilman Frank Red- dick was informed about upgrades to an East Tampa Street. The crosswalk near the River Pines Senior Citi- zens Complex will be up- graded.
The upgrade is slated for completion by April 2018. The crosswalk is located on N. 40th Street near Pine Tree Lane. Ms. Sylvia Holton was struck by a car while at- tempting to cross the busy street. She died 16 days later at Tampa General Hospital.
After the tragedy, mem- bers of the Holton family contacted Councilman Reddick hoping to prevent this type of tragedy from happening again.

When contacted by the
Sentinel, Councilman Reddick said, “I’m happy that the City’s Department of Transportation realized the danger and immediately decided to correct the defi- ciency with a crosswalk.”
In a letter to Council- man Reddick, Ms. Jean Duncan, P. E., Transporta- tion and Stormwater Serv- ices Department Director said, “We appreciate you

providing us with the River Pines residents’ concerns re- garding the inability to cross 40th Street safely. ... We had a meeting ... and have iden- tified the crosswalk on 40th Street in the vicinity of the River Pines Apartments, as a priority project in FY2018.
“The Transportation and Stormwater Services De- partment (TSS) is finalizing our plans to install Rectan- gular Rapid Flashing Bea- cons and we will refurbish the crosswalk markings as well.”
The crosswalk that will be placed in front of the River Pines Sen- ior Citizens Apartment complex will be similar to this.
